I am feeding an 8.6 lbs semi feral I recently brought in. I appreciate the need for high protein wet food. When I asked WELLNESS this is what I received RE the protein content. Can I assume the higher protein the less carb? HELP

No - unfortunately you cannot assume that the higher the protein - the lower the carbs. Protein in pet foods can come from two sources: animal meat and plants. Most pet food companies add meat to their cat food formulas, yes, but unfortunately they also stuff those formulas full of plant based proteins like peas and potatoes to up the protein percentage without spending more money. Plant based proteins such as carbohydrates like potatoes and peas are way cheaper than animal meat protein. A lot of companies are just cheap money making monsters.

Cats are obligate carnivores - they cannot process plant proteins or plants really all that well -at least not in the ridiculously high percentages that pet food companies often feature in their food. There is just little to no nutritious value in plants - especially the popular potatoes and peas of healthy grain free toting companies - for cats. Actually, way too many such as potatoes and peas can cause serious problems over time because they are carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates cause unhealthy weight gain, which can lead to obesity and diabetes etc. Sadly in my opinion Wellness is one of those companies that stuffs both their wet and dry foods with potatoes and peas. I would not trust them to make my cat's food.

Instead, depending on your cat's taste, I would suggest trying any of the following foods:
Tiki Cat Gourmet Carnivore
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen
Nutro Natural Choice
Natural Balance L.I.D
Fancy Feast Classics
Sheba

Man, even Friskies is a better choice for high meat protein than Wellness or Blue.

I would agree that just because something is high in protein doesn't mean it's low in carbs.  That being said, I DO think Wellness Core is an decent food.  YES, it does have dried ground potatoes in it, but it's the 7th ingredient, so I would feed it in my rotation if my cats would eat it.  However, they don't like it, so I don't feed it.  I would definitely NOT feed them the Wellness Devine Duos, or any of the Wellness products that use both Chicken Broth AND Water for moisture.  I really don't understand that.  And I, personally, try to stay away from carrageenan, when possible.  Most of the Nutro Natural Choice canned foods are carrageenan free, as are the Fancy Feast Classics.  (I can't speak to the others)

Next time you gather up the Dry Matter % info on a cat food, you could also ask for the carb % on a dry matter basis.  They should provide it to you
.  Or you can figure it out yourself.  Here's an article that will help you do that:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-to-compare-cat-foods-calculate-carbs-dry-matter-basis
