How do you keep your dogs out of your cat's food? I have 3 cats and one dog . I have been trying to get one of the cats to eat can food so I have been buying all different kinds but she will just walk away from the food and the other 2 cats now have been walking way from their food after only eating a couple bites so then the dog sneaks in and eats all the food. I figure it's the dog because the bowls are licked clean. Callie  is a small dog and can not afford to put on any more weight and I need to be able to monitor how much the cats are actually getting.
I'm in the search for something different now as starting in this last week, she's turning her nose at the kind have been getting her. Was the Friskies indoor chicken pate kind. Have looked into it and haf read on a few sites, at least one for sure, that other cats have been getting sick or doing the same thing mine has. Am not going to be feeding her it any more. Seems like its different and she's not liking because it's changed. I'd like to keep her on some kind of moist food, but she's picky. It's only chicken flavored and in pate. Tried others when i first got her from the person i got her from to make sure. Was told she only would eat specific types of moist and dry, but have made the change to 4Health for dry and the friskies ... but that's where i need to make the change.[/quote I feed my cats in another room, on top of tables, on washer, or in garage or when dogs in their crates. I do not free feed, timed feedings only. I feed one cat in back bedroom another on table or in garage. I feed in kitchen if dogs in their crates. Example up at 6 am dogs sleep in crates so I feed one cat in bedroom and on kitchen table, if she does not finish I put in garage but usually she finishes. I feed cats again at 4, dogs in crates. Cats finish, then I feed dogs (my big boy cat likes dogs food) but they guard it. Dogs go back in crates for the night at 11 pm, then I give cats a little more food. My cats eat only canned and finish every time. They get 3 oz each in am, then 2 oz each at 4 and 1 oz each as a late night snack. Orijen dry used only as a tiny snack. 5 lb bag lasts all year.

I had to get a small computer stand to put the cat dishes on in order to keep the dog out of them.

@SiameseSasha

I felt as you did when I adopted my cat 1.5 months ago and was going to feed her Purina One and some type of wet food, except after what I've read online, I do not want my cat developing any type of illnesses later on because I was feeding her foods with lots of grain fillers in it so that it costs less for the pet food manufacturers and they can make more profit while advertising it in a misleading manner as good for cats. I also now really want that extra year or two that I might be able to get from feeding my little girl pricier foods than I had intended to spend. Vet bills are expensive.

EDIT: Of course, some cats eat "cheaper" food and are fine and live very, long lives...Also, you're very lucky your cat loves wet food.
Thank you so very much for an answer that went right to the core of what I was asking.   I do not have the experience of raising an animal from birth until death and I therefore simply do not have any appreciation of the costs of vet bills, an ongoing illness, etc.   Your answer provided perspective on the issue which I truly appreciate.   I also agree with you that reason exists to reward food manufacturers who do things the right way and reduce the chances for serious illnesses that lead to great expense and anguish.   The comments included in your EDIT portion gave me the most relief confirming that every cat is different, and that  I am not necessarily doing more harm by going with "cheaper" foods, but that better ways do probably exist.   Thanks again!

I am getting worried about Trinity. I adopted her on 10/28/13. At that time they estimated her to be 9 months old. It was hit or miss with her at first with can food but she would eat it occasionally as long as I mixed the dry and the can food together in her dish. Then she stopped eating the can. So I have recently been buying several different brands, meats and textures hoping to find one she will eat. She will take a bite or two and with some she won't even try it. So then I will mix in her 4 health kibble and she still won't touch it. So then I will try putting her kibble next to it in the dish and she won't eat the kibble. If I put the kibble in a separate dish she will eat a little but she use to eat 1/3 cup 2 times a day now she is eating maybe half that or less. She has lost her appetite since I have been trying to get her too eat can food. Maybe the past 7 - 10 days. She doesn't act sick. She has never been that active that is one reason why I have been trying to get her off the kibble.

Yeah! Finally Trinity just ate about a 1/4 of a 3 oz can of Fancy Feast Classic chicken and liver feast. I waited to feed her today hoping she would be good and hungry. I didn't even mix it with dry and she ate it right up.

Ohhh that is such a relief!! I was going to post that maybe you should put a separate post in "health" or "nutrition" about your sweet Trinity so more peeps see it... I'm sorry you are going through this with her! I'm wondering if either an appetite stimulant or... just stick with her dry food to get her to eat again? I haven't ever had that problem so I'm only guessing... but FINGERS crossed she keeps eating FF!!

maybe it's not so bad it's called "kitty crack" afterall lol
I agree .. My cats always liked  all the varieties of FF that  were not classic .They hated pate .. I tried so many other brands could not get them to stay with anything for longer than a few days .

I just got them to  start eating Fancy Feast Classic  so we are staying with it ..

isn't is so strange how they differ? Both of mine would not eat anything with any kind of chunks... so fortunately love the pate.

I was thinking about trying to upgrade since now we are down to just one kitty since Min passed and Mikki has some skin issues...but I also don't want to throw her off her food schedule either...since she isn't quite acting like her old self since Min is gone...
wish it was easy to find out if she's allergic to food or the environment...or just unknown skin issues!

I hear ya . My cats are picky but thankfully no allergy issues ..

I think your best bet would have some allergy tests done .  I hear they may not be 100 % accurate but it may tell you something to help.

FF is usually a good bet even with picky eaters. Mine aren't picky, they are finicky (AKA super picky
). The only FF they will eat now is the turkey feast for kittens. It took me a while to find a rotation of foods they will both eat and I keep some of the FF turkey feast for kittens around just in case they decide they don't like their rotation foods anymore. They cannot resist the FF for kittens.

I will definitely be going to Wally World tomorrow to buy more FF classic liver and chicken feast for Trinity. I hope they have that flavor.I am alo going to look for the FF kitten turkey to see if she will eat that. I haven't bought more than 2 of any one kind of food because I was trying to see which one she likes. At least  FF is better for her than dry kibble. Maybe once she kicks the kibble habit she will be willing to try a variety of canned flavors and better brands.

You will figure over time what she likes. That one is in my rotation.
Mine only likes the FF Classic liver & chicken so-so, but I'm going to occasionally add it into her rotation for variety. I accidentally fed my cat kitten food again. >.
