Hello, I'm new to this site, looking for some insight on a recently developed problem with my cat :(

His names Moe, he's a 3 year old all white, odd eyed cat. He has been fixed, and also last year he had a perineal urthrostomy due to his urethra continually getting blocked and he hasn't had any problems since. Just recently he has started to pee on my bed. He's never done this before and I can't pinpoint why he's started.

Some background info: From 2011 (when I got him) until January this year, he lived with me in an apartment with my ex and our other cat. In January I moved back home and he came with me. He was very skittish and upset with his new environment, but he never peed anywhere he wasn't supposed to and he got used to the new place after a month or so, and it has been over 9 months now, so I don't think him peeing relates to the new house or he would have done it sooner. He never peed anywhere at my apartment either.

He likes to sit at the end of my bed and look out the window, and this is where he's started peeing. I thought maybe his litter box wasn't being cleaned out enough for him, so I started replacing all the litter once a week (it was two weeks, with daily scooping). But he did it again, so I thought: maybe he's peeing there because he can see/smell birds and the stray cats outside my window, and is peeing to "mark his territory" because he gets extremely worked up and excited especially when other cats are running around outside. So I started to keep my window shut when I'm not home, to help keep him from being distracted by them. But today, I came home and he has peed there again.

A few months ago I started seeing someone and I am not home as often as I used to be. I was told it was a myth that cats get upset when their owners are gone for awhile and will act out from normal, and possibly pee where they shouldn't. Is this a myth or is there some truth to it?

I love my cat, he's my baby and my whole world, and soon I want him to move with me to my boyfriends apartment, and I'm scared he will continue this new bad habit. Any ideas, or suggestions?? Please help :(

Hello and welcome!

The bed wetting could be nervousness because you're away more than usual, but my first thought was, "Did you clean the mess with an enzymatic cleaner?" If it wasn't cleaned with an enzymatic cleaner, than chances are, he can still smell his pee in the bedding, so therefore it's "ok" to go there.

Hopefully someone else can add to this!

I'm not sure if I used an enzymatic cleaner. Each time he's done this, I've thoroughly scrubbed the spots where he peed with a woolite stain and odor remover, as well as washed the sheets multiple times before putting them back on. I sprayed my mattress also with the odor remover spray and flipped it so it wasn't on the top anymore, so he couldn't smell it. I was afraid this might be the problem; despite all the cleaning he can still smell it and thinks it's okay to pee there.

I just moved my bed away from the window, just to rule out if that's the problem, so I guess we'll see.
