A month ago my brother and Dad found a tiny little kitten in the middle of the road with her chest pressed against the road for warmth, this little lady was screaming her little head off and made it very clear she was unhappy. My Dad didn't actually know what was making the noise and after a half hour of hearing it they went outside. This was at 3 a.m and she was brought inside it had been raining so there was obviously a worry that she was unwell, you could see the fleas crawling all over her and it was just an awful situation.
My sister stayed up with her all night keeping the other pets out of the room she was in, to avoid upset and the fleas being able to infect them. They put down some newspaper and a tiny amount of food and some water (not knowing how long she was outdoors we didn't want to make her sick) So for the rest of the night this little lady cried and shouted but she did do her business on the paper.
In the morning the first thing we did was to contact the vets and make an appointment for her, next we went down our street and a few surrounding ones. Only to find that after hours of knocking on the doors many people had heard or seen her but had done nothing and as if that wasn't bad enough, one couple had taken her in because she looked like their cats only to toss her back out 15 minutes later, upon discovering the fleas and claiming their cats didn't like her.
Anyway she was taken to the vets later that day and the vet checked her over she had a filthy nose, ears and obviously had fleas but otherwise she was all alright. Details were left with the vet and rescues were telephoned only to claim that there were no spaces available and the vet said she could take her but it would only be for a week to find a home and then she would be put down (NOT AN OPTION). My mother brought her to my flat explaining all of this and asking if i could foster her until her home was found or a space in a shelter opened up, so it has now been a month and no such luck with either so due to this we are going to keep her.
We have no idea what breed she is and the vet estimated her age at 7 weeks old so now she is about 11-12 weeks old and would be at an age were she needs to have her injections and another check up. So later this week I plan on doing that but obviously there are a few thing I am still worried about, I have never owned a cat by myself, always in a family situation so I am very worried about the fact that her nose keeps getting brown dirt in it which I do clean when I notice it but I really have no idea what this is and the vet said it would clear up and obviously hasn't so is this something to worry about?. I have got rid of her fleas with a flea comb and a lot of patience due to the fact she was young and we had no knowledge of her previous flea treatment and didn't want to poison her.
Is there any advice on what to do as I start university soon and she will be home alone a few days a week.
