Subdued cat, don't know why

As if the last few days haven't been tough enough, our foster cat has started acting not like herself. Yesterday when my daughter tried to stroke her back she hissed then ran away, and behaved quite spooked for the next ten minutes. She spent the rest of the day sleeping under the bed that she usually sleeps on top of. Today she has spent most of the day asleep on the bottom of the cat tree or on a cushion beside it, which is really unusual for her. She has stopped trying to dart between our feet to get outside.

She looks subdued, almost depressed, but there are moments when she's active, like this morning when she spent a few minutes killing the dangly bird on the cat tree. She's still eating, though she's not as ravenous as usual and has been leaving mid-meal and coming back later to finish it. She will purr if stroked but isn't leaning into it like usual.

I can't see anything specific to account for her behaviour. Litter box activity is normal. She's not vomiting. I've tried running my hands over her body and didn't hit any sore spots. She's walking okay, though without any spring in her step. There haven't been any recent changes in her diet, which is Wellness Core Turkey, Turkey meal & Duck (she's allergic to chicken, fish and beef, including hypoallergenic foods like Z/D).

I doubt she's reacting to the absence of our Poe because she loathed him and could only be happy that there is no longer another cat in 'her' house.

She's middle-aged (somewhere between 3 and 6 years) and quite porky at the moment.

Any ideas?

Any change in behavior such as this warrants a trip to the vet.  Like you suspect, she could be grieving, but sounds like something else might be going on with her, especially if it's been stressful in your home recently.

Thanks stephanietx. She's behaving normally today, but she emptied her water bowl overnight and threw up her breakfast this morning, so she has a vet appointment tomorrow.

I really wish we could get to the bottom of what's going on with her. It seems like it's just one thing after another ... we'll never find her a home at this rate.
