I'm so glad that I know chocolate is toxic for cats!!! My cat has shown no interest in my human food, which Is great overall, except for a chocolate chip muffin. :/

I let her sniff it and thought she might just lick it, but instead she grabbed the 1/4 piece from my bowl and dragged it to eat. I grabbed all the pieces and vacuumed up any crumbs, but it was only the chocolate crumbs she was going for. Decided to give her tiny pieces of the blueberry muffin, but she was not interested whatsover in that one.

I thought she wanted a Kind bar I was eating previously, but, no, kitty came over and started chewing away at the plastic wrapper just as I had the Kind bar held up to my mouth. Seriously reminded me of Nosferatu or Dracula! I must hide all plastic from her as she loves it. :/

We've never let our cats eat people food.  One of them will eat a bit of baked chicken if it's offered to him but otherwise they get no people snacks.  Of course, we never leave food out where they can be tempted, just to be safe!

We have one who loves to chew paper--not eat it, but he sure put some teeth marks in our paperwork before we learned not to leave that kind of thing out, either!

Sylvia Rose wanted my scrambled egg when she was a kitten, so I gave her some. The look on her face was priceless. She looked like someone who really wanted to spit it out but was too polite to do it. She still doesn't like eggs in any way shape or form, but she'll eat most everything else!

LoL!   I have such a great vision of this.
Cheeky kitty.  Sounds like you have your work cut out there.  I am very happy that Mouse has no interest in human food what so ever and if any plate or cup is put dow other than on a table or in the sink he scrapes away around it in an attempt to get rid of the awful smell!

I made the mistake of sharing my chicken and hamburger with my kitty when I first got her.     Now every time I'm eating she's right there expecting me to share.

I'm such a sap that I always do

@Lokhismom, think your self lucky that your girl is 'right there expecting you to share' and not pouncing in to steel the chicken before it reaches your mouth!  Make sure you make her wait a tiny bit longer each time so she eventually learns she gets the last little bit.

Yes, I'm very glad my kitty doesn't like human food except for the reduced sodium turkey breast from Trader Joe's I give her little bits of. It looks & tastes like it was actually carved off a turkey and not all processed.

I just didn't expect her to like chocolate...deadly chocolate. :/

@MServant - I watched, shocked and stared, and realized... she looks like a lil' Dracula with the fangs out, chewing away like the vampires on tv suck blood and her face is so close to mine... It contributed to me being fearful that my kitty might try to eat me. >.

When we had a dog we used to give him Good Boy chocolate drops. It was really carob. Don't know if you can give cats carob, but you might want to find out.

Same here. I'm a big softie. I'm even making more work for myself by cleaning up, because he absolutely loves it when I toss the food for him to chase. Dry-ish food like tiny chicken pieces or pork, occasionally goat cheese.

Doesn't work even if I try to distract him. I feed him his usual meal at his usual time, and then I go eat on my table, and he'll leave his food halfway and sit there near my chair very politely.

Haha, my cat Enya will literally jump up onto the table while I am eating and sit down next to my plate. She does not lunge for my food or make any bid to steal it. She just sits there and alternates between staring at my food and staring at me with her big kitty eyes. Once and a while I cave.

Her favorite items to beg for include: ice cream, lunch meat such as chicken and turkey, roast chicken, yogurt, canned tuna etc.

LOL! I do have a lil' fanged, chocolate loving Dracula! ^.^ I brought a ziploc bag of 1/2 muffins into my room yesterday to eat and when I got to the 1/2 chocolate chip muffin, my lil' Dracula came running in the room and came over to try to eat too...I quickly sealed up the ziploc bag and had to stop eating. I put my fork down on a plate and kitty was sniffing and then licking it for the residual chocolate. O_O

I'll see about carob and try not to eat chocolate at home ever again!

@Bonitababy   your little critter sounds scary!  He doesn't make funny sounds when inhaling like Hannibal Lekter as well does he?

If that's your baby in your avatar he looks so sweet and inocent too! Like chocolate would never melt in his mouth.

She does scare me sometimes! O_O There was a little noise when she was chewing away at the Kind bar wrapper I had up to my mouth... But she's so sweet sometimes & looks like an innocent kitten when she's sleeping. :D

Jeez. My kitty LOVES chocolate!!! O_O  It's the only human food that sends her running over to me!! I was eating some ice cream the other night that was 1/2 chocolate and she appeared and I didn't realize I had the lid on the side table. I happened to see her on the table licking the chocolate ice cream off the lid!
This morning i was brewing some Gevalia choclate-flavored coffee for the first time and she came running into the kitchen, which is unusual. Poor little kitty! The scent of chocolate was all over my apt from that coffee. I didn't think of her when I thought I'd try it out & also didn't think it'd smell like chocolate.

I just don't get why it's such an attractant to her...I'd read that cats can't taste sweet food...so it must just be the scent. I must be watchful!!! & I must go find some carob to try after I research it (Thanks @Raintyger!)!

From a quick research search, carob seems to be safe for cats as it's listed as non-toxic and doesn't contain any of the things that make chocolate toxic, yet ASPCA posted this on its site:

"Toxicity: Non-Toxic to Dogs, Non-Toxic to Cats, Non-Toxic to Horses

If your pet ingested this [carob] plant, contact your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.*

* A $65 consultation fee may apply." ?_?

http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/carob

Maybe they just want the call and to charge $65?? Or the plant itself might be a problem...

I think it might just be sloppy web management. I got to a listing of "non-toxic plants" and it still says that, except in a different area below the entire list instead of under the specific plant.

http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/anima...-and-non-toxic-plants/non-toxic-plants?page=7

Makes no sense at all. I'd go with the majority of the other pages which say carob is OK for dogs and cats.

If carob works out you're gonna have a great Valentine's Day with kitty!
