About ten days ago her bag of kibble ran out.  It was the third bag of the same kind she's been eating just fine for more than six months.

I had another bag on hand, one that I had ordered off the internet, but she wasn't interested.  I thought perhaps it was stale or the recipe had changed or something, so I picked up another bag of the same kind from Pet Smart.  Same issue -- she wasn't interested.

I could get her to eat a few bites at a time if I stood with her at the bowl and gently pet her while she ate.  If I put a small amount of her regular kibble in a bowl and run warm water on it, she'll drink all the water and eat a few bites.  I've also tried another brand of kibble, and she will eat a few bits at a time but it's not enough.

She's only ever eaten dry food, but I tried a quality brand of canned but she wanted nothing to do with it.  I've tried tuna water with a bit of tuna in it, but no go.  I tried bits of turkey and chicken, no go.  She has never wanted people food so that's not new.  There have been no changes to our routine or her environment, at least not that I can perceive.

She had a complete checkup in January, but I'll be taking her into a vet this week.  In the meantime I would love some ideas on how to get her more interested in eating.  She's never been a big eater, and this change seemed to start just because the bag of food she was eating ran out.  As if all of a sudden nothing tastes right to her.

In all other ways she seems fine.  Her routine is normal, her little box use is normal, sleeping is normal, and she's still very playful and sweet.

Help?

When you have just opened a new bag of food of a brand the cat used to eat with no problem and she suddenly refuses it, that's a Red Flag.  Each batch of food is a new entity and you can't trust just because it's the brand and flavor you used to use that (1) they haven't changed the formula, (2) they haven't changed the SOURCE of some of the ingredients (i.e getting things from China that used to come from the U.S.)  Trust your cat that for some reason, that food is unacceptable.  Try other things, boiled chicken and rice is often good, or chicken cooked on the grill, fresh fish you cook yourself.  Of course if she already ate some of the new food, she could already be suffering food poisoning and not want to eat anything.

Next, Google that particular food, "complaints about BrandX cat food" and see what comes up.  You may discover that it's happening to other people with the same food, which makes it more suspicious.  In fact, this is exactly how recalls happen, people start having problems with something and they report it.  One of the latest ones was the Temptations Cat Treats which all my cats have loved for a long time -- mostly made in Canada -- but suddenly there's signs of a problem as indicated in discussions online, so I just tossed mine away, no point taking chances.

Your cat has told you SOMETHING by not eating the food, so be a detective and find ut what changed, or what is wrong, and in the meantime, feed her something that doesn't show up in a "complaint against BrandX cat food" kind of search.
