Hi

We had been feeding a stray pregnant mother for a while. She gave birth to 5 kittens 4 survived the birth.

The kittens are just over 4 weeks old and I have been feeding them by hand since Sunday. (6 days). It was touch and go everything Is scary and Google is not friendly.

Since their mother left. (She would leavw to relieve herself) I cleared out my room and removed everything put in basket. Litter. Water. A few boxes. Toys.

I purchased some kitten milk formula and have been feeding them by syringe. They lap it up. They would not relieve themselves. I patiently sat with them and after adding some olive oil they all one by one that evening used the litter tray :)

I was wondering how much Ishould be feeding them and how often?

When do I introduce them to food. I mainly have dry (orijen) which was for the mother.

I tried putting some kmr in a bowl. 2 out of 4 lap it up the other 2 don't.

Syringe is the only way they seem to comfortably drink.

Also What are my next steps?

One seems to moan and needs a bit of handsy attention (always wants more) and that starts the others off they seem to always want more.

So how many times a day and how many ml? I don't have anything to measure them with in terms of weight. But they seem healthy. Put weight on not dropped.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you for taking on this challenge!

They will need to be fed every two hours or so.  Get some high calorie, good quality wet kitten food.  You can mix it into a slurry with the KMR and put is in a shallow dish.  The kittens will be sloppy, sloppy, sloppy but this is how they learn to eat solid foods.  You may need to keep up the syringe feeding for a few more weeks.  They will get the hang of it.

They may still need to be stimulated to potty - mother licks their bums with her tongue, which gets them to move their bowels.  You can use a warm, wet washcloth.  You may not have to - assess as you go.

I would definitely buy or borrow a humane trap and catch mom and have her spayed.  Otherwise, she's going to present you with a new round of kittens very soon!
