I'm looking for a new cat litter - I was using and loving scoop away for years - got it at bulk at costco but over the past year or so it just became worse and worse until finally opening and pouring would just release a dust ball - my house and everything in it is covered with kitty litter dust - everything smells like the cat litter. The last straw was when my cats started smelling like cat litter all the time and I kissed one and got a taste of litter in my mouth and I realized it must be killing them. Poor things - I wound up getting rid of 5 bags I had hoarded during the costco coupon sale so it came out to maybe $10 for a 42  pound bag but it was better to lose the money that continue using the stuff.

I read all the reviews on amazon and settled on the dr elsey precious cat litter in the blue bag. I tried a 40 pound bag I bought for $15 at petco and what a difference - very little dust and it seemed just as good on odor control - no scent and even less tracking so I ordered a few bags from chewy online. At the time chewy ran a sale for $12 - the regular price was $15. I used the first few bags and it worked great. Unfortunately I got to using the last bag and it isn't absorbing the odor. It is like inconsistent or I got a bad batch or something. I contacted Dr Elsey and they said they were having problems with their dust machine making it clump less but they were working on it. Meanwhile chewy raised the price by $5 a bag and they now charge $20 which is ridiculous.

It is too expensive to buy cat litter for $20 - with multiple cats I wind up spending more on their litter then on my lunch for the month. I was almost tempted to try the scoop away again because the $12 for 42 pounds was so reasonable but then I read the reviews and they haven't fixed their dust problem - which was really disgusting for me and even worse for the cats.

There has to be a litter inbetween unhealthy dust buckets and going broke - I like the convenience of clumping litter and that is what I'm used too. I am wondering if anybody here has hit upon the perfect litter - ?

The crystal based litters are basically dust free, and whole not cheap they last a l o n g time.

Check your local grocery store. Hy-Vee (the usual grocery store around here) has a store-brand unscented clumping litter that's pretty good. It's not too dusty and the odor control is OK. It comes in a bag not a bucket. Your grocery store may have something similar.

I love the Fresh For Life Multi Cat from Pet Valu, which is what I use for my cats. It clumps well and there is little dust from it. It is unscented but has great odour control. The Swheat Scoop Multi works nicely, too, but that's a lot more money.

I like Cat's Pride. It is often on sale at Walmart or at Amazon.com. I also like Tidy Cats. I go a 20lb jug at WM for $6.98. I used World's bet cat litter and stopped using it. It does clump well but is expensive and doesn't control odor well at all.

I've started using Claws and Paws clumping litter from Tractor Supply Company. It's low dust, unscented, and has great odor control.

These are all helpful tips for me! We use a variety of "clumping" brands, not loyal to any one particular brand. Something cheap and effective (and preferably available on Amazon) would be wonderful.
