Let me first start this post by saying that my cat has diabetes and just got regulated so it's like we live at the vet right now. I've spent a LOT of money getting her to this point where we have a great dose for her and the last time she was at the vet was last week, so please don't judge me for asking public opinion instead of running to the vet with her. She is ten years old. We have had her for 2.5 years. Last Wednesday I took her in for a glucose curve and got wonderful news: we finally had the perfect dose. I was so giddy and happy. When riding back from the vet she got really stressed out. She stopped meowing and moving and had crazy eyes and held her mouth open for a few seconds. I pulled over and petted her and she snapped out of it. She was obviously really stressed.

A couple of days later I noticed a raw spot along the side of her lip. It was like she'd rubbed her face (like she always does) on something sharp. I wondered why the vet hadn't said anything: she was just there. He always examines her and I'm sure if he saw any noticeable dental issues he would let me know because they always have before. My mind went back to a couple of summers ago when she was diagnosed with feline herpes and the vet said  it was likely due to stress. Her eyes swelled along with her gums and face that time. My mind now clouded with worry and my pocket empty from my very recent visit, I started giving her Viralys 2x per day like he instructed with her last episode.

It has been a week and the redness has improved but is still slight. She has the tiniest little droop lip that I wouldn't even notice without getting all up in her business. She is not feverish. Eating, drinking, using the bathroom just fine. Should I take her to the vet or continue to let this heal on it's own? We take excellent care of our baby but her diabetes has completely drained my resources, and I'd like to think that the vet would have seen some indications if it were something totally serious.

How is your cat doing now?  I am sorry you haven't had any earlier replies.

When your cat was prescribed the Viralys for probably herpes had she been diagnosed with diabetes?  L Lysine alters how some proteins are absorbed and can cause additional strain on the liver so it is wise to check with your vet if supplimenting this where there are any other health issues.  That said, if you are using short term and within normal prescribed levels your cat should be fine, but I would definitely avoid any prolonged use without vet advice.  I hope the lip is returning to normal and concerns have subsided.

I too have a herpese kitty and his is certainly triggered by stress.

It looks like your kitty's immediate issue, the diabetes, is under control. I have a diabetic cat too. Congrats on getting the sugar controlled!! Because it is controlled minor issues like the scrap your cat has don't become a big issues because she is able to heal. if it's healing on its own and you see no behavior changes related to abnormal sugar I wouldn't worry too much. As for the lysine I was told by a vet once they have an outbreak it's too late to use the lysine I don't know if that is true. Because diabetic cats need to stay away from certain types of treatments I tend to check with the vet on everything I give my diabetic cat as far a supplements just to make sure. I think you kitty is ok healing on her own.
