@Ritz  found that we were mentioned in this very annoying editorial a couple of days ago -
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local...fec0e4-3ddc-11e4-b0ea-8141703bbf6f_story.html

It's an anti-spay/neuter article, so be prepared to be upset if you read this, but at least he mentions TCS! If you decide to add a comment, feel free to mention you're members here and that we are officially a pro-spay/neuter site. You can also link to this article -

I can't even.

I'll just go ballistic and I hate getting into internet wars at this stage of my life.

Really irresponsible commentary on the authors part

I broke down and tweeted to him.  Told him his article is a piece of trash and he should have delved deeper for the truth.

Ok, I feel better now.  I can just argue with him directly instead of thousands.  Writing a comment at the article is useless as everyone agrees with the stance that he's a moron and uninformed.

People like this are paid to be controversial.  It's the old thing about any attention is better than no attention.  Of course they also attract someone, I have always been suspicious that it's set up, to agree with them to keep the 'discussion' going.

I think you're probably right @Denice  , they love the attention and argument.  What's sad is that people read what is said and believe it and it reinforces for them that it is OK to keep entire cats and let them breed, or continue with behaviours and develop injuries and health issues that are unnecessary.  And why humanise them to justify his position?

Moron. And that's the kindest thing I can call the author.

Spaying/neutering causes cancer? I've had cats all my life, dozens of them, all were spayed and neutered--never had that happen due to spaying/neutering.

How can they stand Kitty's yowling every 3 weeks?

And he thinks she can't get pregnant because she's indoors? Right. The urge to merge will make a cat do their best to get outside--such as when you open the door, or leave a screened window open, and a tomcat sits on the outside sill (I've seen this even with my spayed female. I have a lovely, 3" scar on my top left arm due to sleeping on my stomach under that same window, and being attacked by my freaked-out female cat. It needed stitches, but it was 3:00 a.m., so no way!)

You might be right about he should have picked a better subject. There are people who will read that article and be encouraged to do the same. More animals headed for euthanasia because this moron thinks he's controversial. Here is my reply to the article:

Mr. Milloy, will you still like Kitty the way she is when she she goes into heat and is howling to get outside at all hours of the night? How about when there are toms outside your house calling to her because they can smell that she's in heat? How about when she does figure out how to get out (she will, she's smarter than you) and comes home 3 days later knocked up with a litter of kittens? What will you do with them? Pawn them off on neighbors? Take them to a shelter hoping they have room? Keep them and not get them spayed or neutered either so that same cycle can keep going? If you aren't going to do the responsible thing with this animal, please give her to someone who will. You are not doing her any favors by keeping her intact and the fact that you took the time to write this article without having done any research whatsoever about the health benefits of spaying and neutering is irresponsible. Since you are not a breeder with a pedigreed animal, there is no logical reason to keep Kitty intact unless you have a thing for cats in heat and if that's the case, you may want to talk to someone about that. Since you did mention TheCatSite.com, I encourage you and your readers to get more information on why spaying and neutering is important to a cat's health in this article: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/spay-and-neuter-your-c...
My 2 cats are spayed and I wouldn't have it any other way. They are also healthy and happy. Spaying a female decreases the chances of mammary cancer, it does not increase it.

I'd like to point out to him that his cat is probably already spayed, if she wasn't pregnant when she showed up and hasn't howled and sprayed the house down yet :D. Wouldn't that be hilarious? Write an anti-spay column about how you like your cat "the way she is" and it turns out she's already spayed? Hehehehe.

Spay/neuter can increase the risks of certain cancers in dogs, particularly large dogs, if they're altered before full maturity (may be 3 years + in larger dogs). But as far as I know, there is no such risk in cats.

Have not read the article, probably wont.

For the same reason I dont listen to political pundits(often).

Sensationalism, emotionalism and I dislike overeducated people that

think they are so much smarter than the average bear.

That said,

Ignorance is alive and well in American culture, lots of education still needed.

They have these same kind of people making decisions about our children, elderly, disabled.

Lets hear it for freedom of speech, alive and well in America, works both ways though.
