My cat Peeta is almost 6 months old and just yesterday I noticed that he seems to have a swollen bottom lip. At first I thought maybe he just has a big bottom lip that I never noticed but I'm pretty sure it is not supposed to be that big. I can't call his vet until morning and he seems to be fine... but I am still worried. I read somewhere that it could be an allergy? He just got treated for fleas , fixed, and a micro chip implant 8 days ago and today I took him to the groomer to get his nails cut for the first time and I also had him get an all natural citrus based flea wash to make sure they are taken care of, could any of these things cause it? And will he be ok till morning? I hope so, I'm going to worry all night regardless...

I am sorry I do not have any ideas or help for you.  Have you have managed to contact your vet and had any advice yet?  I hope your cat is OK and your vet was able to reassure you.

You say his lip is swollen and you thought it  was just his normal lip, is it pink/red as well? Have you noticed dark specks on his chin? (Unless he is a dark cat, then... you know, moot point.)

Dark specks: Cats and kittens do get acne, especially on the lower lip. Make sure you are cleaning his food and water dishes regularly. The acne will go away on its own.

Pink/red, swollen: Cats can have minor allergies, especially to plastics. Not all plastics will cause an allergic reaction, either, so if you recently purchased a new food dish or plastic toy, it might be the culprit. I do not ever recommend plastic feeding dishes, because of allergies and the fact that they can retain food odors, etc. that will make meal time unpleasant. Remove the allergen (toy, bowl, etc) if you think you know what it is, and replace his dishes with ceramic or metal dishes. The "fat lip" usually goes away in about two weeks.

I particularly think of these things because my sister always brought her cat home from college over summer breaks, and every time he would get a fat pink lower lip. It turned out to be a plastic allergy. His dishes were not plastic, but some of the water dishes my mother kept around the house for her cat and dogs *were* plastic.

If your cat is eating normally and does not seem to be in pain, I would not be overly concerned. But if kitty acts uncomfortable or cannot eat normally, then the above suggestions are not the problem and I would take kitty to the vet.

Best luck!
