Hi everyone,

I have a 2.5 yr old orange male cat who has bladder crystal issues. This is usually exasperated by stress from our more territorial male in our house, but I suspect he'd have this any way since it seems prominent in orange male cats from what I've heard. My buddy is still at the vet, because he has a very bad reaction to the stress and hisses and spits and gets all upset and really doesn't want anyone messing with him, least of all me or my fiance.

Now that we know what's going on, we are exploring what to do to get him back on track. One is his prescription diet. His vet thinks he needs to be on Royal Canin Urinary SO. I've read reviews online and it looks fantastic. The problem is... when Vinny is so upset, he won't eat well. I want to try to entice him to eat because that's how he's going to start feeling  better. The vet did not offer me any pain meds for Vinny, but I think I want to ask of they'll start him on something before I pick him up tomorrow, to hopefully get him to eat, and in a better frame of mind to accept food and us taking care of him when we get him home.

I kid you not, this cat goes APE when he's not feeling well. He hisses at his own bottom! He hides from us, acts very aggressive and although he's not attacked us, I'm quite sure if I tried to grab him up he'd scratch or bite me in response to being so upset. I do no think that is very productive at all.

Do you think I have a right/reason to ask to start him on some pain meds tomorrow? I am going to visit him in the AM and drop off the food (my vet doesn't sell it, so I have to take the prescription to the store and buy it myself), but I'm not going to be able to pick him up until 4 PM, so I wanted to have them give him some meds, some in liquid form for me to take home (they did this before when he had a UTI too) and he did much better and was able to stop acting so crazy so he could start trusting us more and know that we're just trying to make him feel better and take care of him.

Also, are there any other supplements that you give your cats out there that have these issues? I do wet food as well in the morning. He loves it. My vet says no fishy. Plus, I get it all mushy with more water to help, even though he drinks water pretty well. I keep two full at all times for his own personal access.

Stopping fish resolved my guy's crystals. But he did not have an infection; the crystals were discovered via routine urinalysis, so I think our situations are different.

Have you read this site? It deals primarily with issues related to crystals and UTIs in cats: http://www.catinfo.org/

I think you are right to ask for pain medication. I know whenever I've had a bladder infection, it's been most painful. The vet who maintains the site above believes pain medication is very important for these guys.

Good luck!
