Hi,

I came across the clumping litter that I can flush down the toilet few days ago and I replaced my cat's regular litter with it. But since yesterday I have realised that my cat's been eating the new litter. Now I am not sure if she was eating the other litter as well ( I never saw her eating it) or if she is just eating this new litter. Is this dangerous to her health? Is she just tasting it for a while and will stop soon? What can I do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I had a cat to eat Cat's Pride flushable clumping litter once, and it turned out that she was anemic from renal failure.  The litter didn't cause the renal failure (diabetes and age did), but eating i was the first sign that she was in renal failure.  I'd get her to a vet just in case.  She may pass the litter just fine, or she may have an obstruction.  In any case pica is not normal and cold cause nutritional deficiencies as well.

Hi Peaches,

Thanks for your reply. My cat is not old at all. She is only 2.5 years old. Do you think this is a normal behaviour for a young cat?

It's not normal behavior for an adult cat to eat litter.  Is the litter one of the ones made of corn?  It would still not be good for her but that might be more understandable.

No it isn't normal and you should get her to a vet ASAP because as you know clumping litter clumps when wet which will happen inevitably in your cat's stomach so it might obstruct her colon if she ate enough of the litter.

Pica is the ingestion of nonfood items and can cause nutritional problems.  They can also cause obstruction which can go bad quickly.  If she is otherwise fine, I would still be getting an appointment in the near future just to get her checked over.  Has she only done this with this one specific luitter yuo're using?  A litter switch may fix all this.

HI,

Thank you all for your response. The new litter I am using is plant/vegetable based. I called few vets yesterday and got mixed answers. One of them told me that it was not a big deal and that my cat would stop eating the litter after a while. Another one told me that it was bad and if I wanted to continue with the same litter, I should add some vinegar on it so that my cat would not eat it. But this did not work. I still saw her eating it. So today I am going to go back to the old litter. If she eats the old litter too, I will have her checked.
