Hello hello!

What foods did you dislike as a child, but later like as an adult?

(Or vice versa, if you would like to add)

I know there is a decent list for me altogether, but first came to mind was mustard. I really thought it tasted super gross when I was a pipsqueek, but now I find myself enjoying it.

When Mom was alive and could still cook, she'd have me for a special lunch every spring. It was always young dandelion in a sauce over boiled potatoes. Yum, so good. I wouldn't eat it when I was younger, but love it now. I haven't had it in a few years now as I don't really know how she made it.

We didn't touch the stuff when we were kids, but after we grew up, Mom always made my sister and I liver and onions for our birthday dinners.  Since Mom died, I make it for my sister and me once or twice a year.

I really like stewed tomatoes now, too, but wouldn't touch it when I was a child.

I don't think there was ANYTHING I wouldn't eat when I was a child, I loved trying new foods, even rattlesnake, octopus, and crawdads. But now, the older I get, I can't stand fish. When I open tuna for my husband (or the cats) I almost gag. ????? I tried a bite of tuna salad the other day and had to spit it out!

Pretty much didn't like the same things as now. I never liked ketchup, mustard or sweet relish/pickles as a kid. I still can't stand them.

I am a bit more specific to brands I will eat.  Not always name brands as many I prefer the store brand. For example years ago I would eat ANY hot dogs, Now it has to be Aldi brand or 2 name brands.  I see that with multiple things.  At least most are the store brand:)

Block cheeses I never would touch but now find I enjoy a few.

tomato sauce. For the longest time, I'd only eat my pasta with butter. Now I can't eat it with butter, only with my mom's tomato sauce!

The two I remember most vividly are rutabagas and dried lima beans. On those nights I ate biscuits and molasses.

I hated raspberries as a child.  The flavor would actually almost make me gag and I would spit it out.  While not my favorite fruit I do like raspberries now.

Corn.  Yea, hard to believe.  But back in those days, fresh corn wasn't anywhere to be found in the depths of Brooklyn, and if it was, most likely it was several days old by then.  My mom would cook it to death.  In fact, she cooked all fresh veggies similarly and it wasn't until I was grown up, living on my own and cooking for myself that I discovered how wonderful vegetables were.

Now I can eat an ear of corn raw, if it's local and fresh from the field.  NJ is famous for their sweet corn and not doing a thing to it, is one of summer's little pleasures.

Sausages and canned tomatoes. Anyone else's mother make them sit there until it was eaten? I sat there until bedtime a few times. I still can't handle the sausages, but I do love canned tomatoes.

My Mom never made us sit and eat but respected true dislikes.  Ham and pork chops was my major I can NOT touch it foods.  Still are by far!  If we took it we had to eat i-spread out to next days meals though so we took small portions and added on.  But really IMO that is a good thing since wasting food is bad.  She always made a little extra but not to much unless it was a chicken or something to be reused in another meal.

My grandparents made my parents sit until they ate all their food and my parents thought that was so wrong they never made us eat what we didn't like. My mother didn't even like everyone sitting around the dinner table because her dad would backhand the kids at the table and it gave her flashbacks :(. So we were wild little non-traditional eaters :tongue2:. Ate whatever we wanted wherever we wanted.

As for what I didn't like. . .I went through stages. At one point I didn't like mustard at all, then I liked it on everything. Same with mayo. I don't really remember not liking any actual foods (just condiments); maybe my mother's casual approach to food just made us not bother disliking things. Plus my dad is super picky (guess making him sit at the table all night didn't work, huh?) so when he was home she only made what he liked and we all liked that stuff (burgers, spaghetti, mac & cheese, etc.). It's always been more about texture for me anyway---my mom says I couldn't eat baby food when I was a baby because it made me gag, LOL. Smooth textured food still does it to me.

Mushrooms, tomatoes, pickles, ginseng tea, ginger (in small doses, not those giant chunks). I still have a love-hate relationship with bitter melon.

Green beans.  Geez I hated green beans!  Strings get caught in your teeth and the flavor was just awful.  I wasn't crazy about beans and peas but I would eat some varieties.  Now I love them!

Without going into a lot of detail, my mother was a big believer in the "clean plate club."  I woke up face down in food more than once.

Mustard and cocoanut.  I really liked most things as a kid.  My mother's rule was that I had to try it and then if I didn't like it; I didn't have to eat it.  She says I ate basically everything.

Unfortunately that hasn't worked quite so well in my house.  I've had to add in the rule "If you've eaten it and liked it before; you have to eat it again."

I hated salad cream, but got to like it in my late thirties, how funny is that?
