My cat keeps attacking me, no matter how much I play with him...

Okay, so I adopted my adorable cat Milo 7 months ago from a family who couldn't keep him. He was 5 months old when I got him. He was so sweet and cuddly, albeit SUPER energetic. The most aggressive he got was love bites. Now he's a little over a year old, and he wont stop attacking me, no matter how much I play with him. Every once in a while he wants to snuggle, usually like twice a day... I play with him constantly. And when he's good, he's SO good. But the last few months have been really intense and I don't know what to do. He runs around like crazy and acts like he's afraid of me; bites me on my arms, hands, back, legs, and feet. No matter how much I hiss or growl, he doesn't seam to care. Earlier tonight he started jumping on my face and biting, which he's never done before. The last time I took him to the vet they said nothing was wrong, that was like 3 months ago though. I'm supposed to take him in next month for a check up, but maybe I should take him in sooner? I'll take any advice at this point... I love my little booger, and just want him to be happy and healthy...

Hi Hannah S and welcome to TCS..

The question everyone will ask first is, has he been neutered?

I would definitely take him in sooner, to rule out pain-induced aggression or other medical reasons.

Is he an indoor cat?

I'm wondering about redirected aggression.. for example if there is a cat outside that he can see he can take it out on you.

Is there anything you can think of that happened around the time it started?

He is an indoor cat, and I know for a fact that he sees other cats outside all day. There are also at least 3 other cats in my building. When this weird behavior started, I thought he was just going through puberty or whatever, because nothing out of the ordinary happened. He lives a pretty routine life. I play with him for almost an hour every morning before I feed him, then again at night.

I think I'll call the vet today...

oh wow..that stinks.just a guess..stop playing with him,withdraw physically? if not emotionally?

surely he is trying to tell you something ,but what??Any chance he could roam outside and work off some of the energy??

I know noone wants to chance that. But it doesnt benefit the animals to have scared or injured humans.

I dont think its good for you to get hurt.

I've tried that. I've tried leaving the room, but he's too fast and always gets where I'm going ahead of me. In the past month there have been 4 different missing cat signs put up in my neighborhood. So, while I'm sure he would appreciate it, he's not going outside if I can help it.

That's really wise, I think, to keep him in.  It also means he needs lots of activity, as a young lad can go stir crazy.  But you seem to be doing that.

Have you tried Feliway diffusers?  If they work, they can work wonders.

Also, one of our members has a similar problem and finds that this has benefited: http://www.beaphar.co.uk/ProductDetail/ProdID/164/CatID/8  It's main thing is valerian and she feels her cats have become more calm.  But another member said that valerian makes her boy go really wild (I don't think that's common, but it's worth knowing that it can happen)

You probably know most of this, but have a read through, just in case:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/cat-aggression-toward-people

All of this is something to file away if you can't get any help from the vet.. but I really do think that's your first port of call. I really hope you get some answers!

Thanks everyone for your advice! I took Milo to the vet the other day, and they ran some tests... I found out he has FLUTD. They gave me antibiotics and special food. He seems to be getting better quickly. They also gave me a Feliway diffuser, and that thing is a miracle!

Hi Hannah, I'm so glad your kittie is getting better! Chronic pain definitely changes a cat's behavior, so hopefully the aggression will go away now. Keep us posted!
