It will be a long time coming but I'm really getting a hankering for yet another cat. Only this time I'm really wanting a Maine Coon! I plan on doing lots of research into this breed and while It won't be for at least another year, I cannot wait!

If you have or have had a Maine Coon, tell me all about them. I'd love to know stuff beyond what I can find on the internet.

Hi elise1030 elise1030

I own, show and breed Maine Coons. :D I currently have 8 beautiful Maine Coons, 4 males and 4 females.

MC's are gentle giants, really easy going and are very dog like :lol3: Mine like to play fetch, love water and spend hours playing in the water bowls. They are quite vocal, they talk with a range of chirps, cheeps and thrills. They don't meow much and their meows sound like tiny squeaks :D Quite funny coming from such a large cat.

They are not graceful like other cats, they can't seem to walk silently like other cats do they stomp and you can hear them coming from far away. Going up or downstairs they sound like a heavy footed human you would never think it was a cat.

They also do something called the maine coon flop. ;) Where other cats get on your lap and lie down gently MC's get on your lap and just flop over, expecting you to stop them from falling off.

Anything else you would like to know ? Just ask ;)

Thanks @GemsGem!  I've always been entirely fascinated with them but I've had cats since I was 13 ( I'm in my mid-30s now) I think it's their ears and coats and for the longest time I thought the ears themselves were pointed lol.

Do they have any special dietary requirements, particularly as kittens given they can grow to be such large cats?

Nope, nothing different to any other cat/kitten. I find they do seem to eat more as kittens than other breeds, but as adults they eat the same amount as any other cat. :D
