Malibu cannot handle the red meats that I have given him so far, although he does love them.

He eats beef enthusiastically and can keep it down but develops very stinky, mucus-y stool. Yes, I did introduce it VERY slowly. After 2 weeks, we worked beef up to only 1/12th of his total meals and then the stinky, mucus-y poop happens.

Lamb is a little different. If I give him 50% Lamb and 50% Turkey for one meal a few times a week, he is completely fine. Stool is normal. But if I give him 100% Lamb as a meal, he vomits it up about half the time.

I know it's completely fine to feed mostly poultry but I really wanted to be able to offer him at least ONE "novel" protein since the rest of his diet consists of quail, chicken and turkey.

So is pork REALLY the other white meat? Or is it pretty much not tolerated by cats who tend to have a red meat intolerance?

I feed pork pretty regularly.  It depends on the cut you get.  There are some "roasts" that are primarily the white meat, relatively low fat.  And there are other cuts that are definitely the fattier, "red" cuts.  You can't really equate pork with chicken, but  I think of it as the "middle child" between chicken and beef / lamb / goat.

Since none of my cats are red meat intolerant, I really can't say how pork might affect yours.

Gotcha! Thanks for the response.

The pork that I'm considering is actually whole ground pork from Hare Today so it would be the whole "shebang" I guess! The only reason I'm asking is because since I get my meats from Hare Today, my orders are large and I get 16-24 weeks at a time for the most part. So, I don't want to order TOO much pork in case he can't handle it but if I don't get enough then I have to make another small order and pay a lot for shipping.

I wish Hare Today was a real, local STORE that I could go to! That would be oh, so nice...

I feed cooked pork regularly and neither cat has trouble. Tim's pretty sensitive and cannot handle lamb, but he does fine with pork. I intend to try raw one of these days.

I can buy Hare Today products from a local pet store. They have a few products in stock and can special order others. Maybe you can ask your local pet store if they can carry Hare Today products? Or contact Hare Today and ask if they have any local stores in your area that sells their products.

Gadget will regurgitate beef it is raw, but cooking it to 50% seems to eliminate that.  Raw pork of any cut doesn't bother any of my cats, actually it is more palatable to them all and just as "safe" for their tummies as chicken.

I feel ya on trying new proteins and just wanting to try a little bit instead of 5 lbs of something they may not be able to tolerate.  Still haven't put in an order.

My cat refuses and pukes red meats pretty much entirely.  I've tried a ton over the years, in all sorts of forms.  That said, don't give up, this summer she ate a few pieces of pork heart and kept it down.  I feed mostly poultry obviously, chicken, turkey, game hen, grouse, duck but she adores rabbit and mice also.

Thanks, I just e-mailed them to ask if they have any stores in the Denver area carrying their products..  Fingers (and toes) crossed.

Unfortunately for my babies Hare Today has no local shops in Colorado..
Will have to order from them..   Was hoping to avoid shipping cost.

My Sheldon is the same. He took 9 months to be able to tolerate a meal that was 50% red meat (venison, beef, lamb) - but could eat pork, full meals, no issues - including the ground pork from HT.

Hare Today doesn't have any shops anywhere. Unless someone lives within driving distance of their farm in western PA to pick up orders, it has to be shipped. For me, when I buy a full box of 50 pounds, it adds about $0.50 to the per pound cost of the meat.

In post # 5 above, the poster was able to buy in a local pet store..  that's what I was hoping for.

Missed that. Must be a store that orders it directly from HT, as my understanding is that they have not developed distribution other than direct. Of course, the store would have to build in the cost of having it shipped... ;)
