Do you remember when we first met?

I do.

I was handing off a stack of paperwork to [marketing director] Janice. There you were, on your favorite blanket, in one of the cubicles. It seemed there were a couple of you new residents at the admin offices. I was going to drop off the stack at Janice's desk.

I walked past you, and what did you do? You swatted lightly at me, just as you did yesterday when I wanted to use the bathroom, just as you have been doing for the past year. You swatted at me, and your claw was stuck to my shirt. It was so cute. Of course, I had to stop to pet you, otherwise I might rip your claw out. Such fluffy coat. You were "Yoda" back then.

I asked you to move in with me. You weren't too happy at first. You stayed in your carrier for about a couple of hours when I closed the door to my bedroom to let you explore. I don't think you even came out your carrier. I let the bedroom door open, and you dashed out of the room and went straight under the recliner. And pretty much stayed there for the next 3 days.

I'm proud of how much you've changed. You always have been skittish, but you've gotten used to many things over the past year. I still wish you'd tell me why you are so terrified of cardboard boxes though. Other cats love boxes. They will find any excuse to sit in one, not run away from one.

For the first few months, you divide time between my bedroom and the living room where I work. You'd spend a few hours in my bedroom and you want to be left alone. The other half of the day you'd come out to hang out. You didn't like being petted back then either. 10 seconds was about the max you'd tolerate.

Now you're rarely in my bedroom, always either on the windowsill or on my desk. Or the couch. Or the tree. Or in one corner. Pretty much everywhere, but always nearby. I do notice. A few months back you started purring everytime I pet you, and you'll let me pet you for as long as I want. It's very nice of you. Until you start swatting at my shirt because I get up and leave.

You're very well-behaved, even my dont-care-for-cats roommate is starting to grow fond of you. I never had to tell you not to jump on the kitchen counter, or go through the trash cans, or wake me up meowing incessantly for food. You'd wait till I was up. You only meow when you're really hungry and I missed your mealtime. When you beg for food, even though I should ignore you, you merely sit there politely until I share my food with you.

If you could understand me, I'd tell you that you'll always be warm and safe for the rest of your life. You have my word. You don't have to worry about finding scraps for food or sleeping under the bushes for 10 minutes at a time anymore. Or mean people shooing you away. You're always welcome anywhere in my home.

Happy 1st anniversary, little guy. Can I have my shirt back now, please?
