My cat Joseph poops right next to the clean litter box and not in it. He also pees everywhere and just last night he went in my daughter's closet! I have had him for four years now and this behavior started with the pee and now he poops too. I have 2 litter boxes that are always clean and he still does this. I have another cat who goes where she is suppose to so I really don't know what to do. When we open the front door he is always running outside like he wants to be an outdoor cat. I am ready to take him to a shelter or find him another home where he can stay outside. This is my 11 years old daughter's cat so this is not easy for me. I really need some advice about how to stop him from doing this or he just has to go...

is this a recent thing or has he done it for the 4 years you've had him? if it's a recent thing, he might be having a hard time going to the bathroom in a tight space or something scared him while he was going one day and now he thinks it'll happen again if he uses it. Or it could be a medical issue. My cat started pooping outside the box but I brought her in and it turned out she had kidney disease and an impacted bowel and it was just hurting her to be inside a small space when she was going, so she's now on laxatives to keep her regular and some stuff for her kidneys and she stopped going outside the box. I'd go see a vet and see if something is wrong. Get a urinalysis too

Yes, this is recent with the pooping but the peeing has been going on for a while now. I have an appointment to see the vet this Friday. Thank you for your comment.

We usually reccomend a vet visit to everyone for the simple reason that if it IS medical; approaching it from a behavioral standpoint won't help much.  Cats are notorious at hiding pain too; so I'm glad you already have the vet visit scheduled.

Is there any way you can add a 3rd litter box?  Some cats don't like to pee where they poo or where others have gone; so sometimes people need one box per cat plus one.  Also be sure you are using a good enzyme cleaner wherever he has gone.  Use a black light to help you find spots.  If he can smell it (even if you can't) he may be attracted back to that area.

Is there anywhere in particular he seems to go often?  You could try placing a litter box in that spot and gradually moving it to a more desirable location.

Cat's don't react to discipline the way dogs or humans do; so praise him when he is good, but try not to make a big fuss if he's gone wrong because that can actually encourage him to go seek out MORE places to go.

If you haven't read this article already; it may have some useful information for you as well: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/litterbox-problems-in-cats-the-ultimate-guide

Good luck!  I know dealing with this can be frustrating!

Maybe the litter hurts his feet?
maybe he'd prefer a closed litter box?
