Searching all over the internet and reports are random so I am hoping for some focused answers.

I posted before about a sudden switch in behavior in my newly rescued 4 year old male. He has been sleeping non stop for the past few days and wants nothing to do with anything. When we first brought him home, he couldn't even be 3 feet away from us and was a purr machine.

When I took him to the vet on Thursday night for a weeping eye, the vet diagnosed a URI and suggested Convenia, since I am not comfortable with traditional daily dosage. He is a bigger cat and still a little aggressive. We agreed convenia was right for this time.

Now I read that the convenia has done to this many cats - lethargic, complete change in personality. I understand the drug is in his system and needs time.

My question is has anyone had a cat get through this time and return to normal? From what I read other places, this is life altering and I may never get my nuzzly purry boy back.

I don't think Covenia is life altering, but more on the lines of life threatening for some cats. The problem with this drug is that it stays in the system of the cat for weeks, therefore if the cat has a bad reaction to it, there is no way to get it out and it has taken the lives of many cats.

Some symptoms of a "bad reaction" would include lethargy, seizures, excessive drooling, decreased appetite, dehydration, etc. If your cat doesn't eat for more than 24 hours, I would advise an emergency vet visit.

Not trying to scare you by any means and Covenia certainly does not kill every cat. My cat had a Covenia shot in 2011 and he was fine with it, no negative side effects. However, if I would have known how controversial this drug was, I would have certainly opted out of it and gone with daily dosing.

If I were you, I would just keep a very close eye on the cat's eating and litter box habits for the next few days. If he is eating normally for the next few days, you are probably in the clear. Once the drug is out of his system his personality should not change at all.

He is eating fine. Drinking much more than normal. Just sleeping a ton and not purring... and he was a purr machine. Definitely watching like a hawk for the next few days.

I will advise my vet, who I trust dearly, that they give a bit more information on the side effects and dangers. I certainly was in the dark about it until I read more. I asked my normal questions, but didn't even think about how bad it could be, since it was an antibiotic.

I know people have had bad experiences with Convenia but one of my cat's recently had a Convenia shot and was fine.
The thing about Convenia is, from what I understand, is that it stays in the cat's system longer than other antibiotics so

if your cat happens to have and adverse reaction to it, it could be bad. I don't know that I would let my vet give it to my

cats again because of that reason but honestly she  had no reaction at all and is fine today.
