My Devon boy started on Lasix last Sunday for heart failure. Since then he's been smacking his lips and opening his mouth a lot, a bit like my kids do when they're sucking on a sour Warhead. At times he hovers over the water bowl, smacks his lips, looks disgusted and walks away.

My vet has no idea why he's doing it. Initially I thought he might be nauseous but he's eating huge amounts of wet food, at least double what he was eating before starting on the medication. He does have a large shiny red lesion in the middle of his tongue, but that's been there since at least April and didn't cause him any obvious issues before (we have no idea what's caused it).

We're stumped. Nobody here has seen a cat do anything like this. Could the lasix be causing a bad taste in his mouth?

Does he do this continually or off and on. Does he seem "zoned out" so to speak as he is doing it? It could be a partial seizure. There are many types of seizures. Not just the grand mals (which are now called tonic clonics) that most are aware of where you fall and shake. Smacking lips is something that is done with partials and The whole in the tongue from biting it is normal too. Heart problems and seizures tend to run together as well as strokes. In humans and animals. I know from personal experience on both sides.

Oh wow, that possibility hadn't even occurred to me. I suppose it could be. He doesn't seem to be zoned out, but I've done a bit of reading and apparently with simple partial seizures they stay conscious and alert. I'll raise it with the vet when I see her next.

I had a siamese years ago who had a couple of grand mal seizures after banging her head as a kitten. This is nowhere near as terrifying.
