Hi all, I'm a new member and have just become the owner of my friends British Shorthair cat due to an allergy with their baby. Firstly I would like to say thanks for such a great site and very informative. I'm an English guy but living in Moscow, Russia.
I have already many questions but I should look around the forums first as maybe I will find answers already to my questions but I look forward to speaking to you all.
John.

Hi Jonny, Welcome to The Cat Site.

Just a quick bit of advice, cats don't usually need baths or haircuts, they're pretty good at keeping themselves clean. It's only the long haired cats who need a lot of grooming. For a British Short hair all you need to do is brush him with a cat brush every once in a while.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures. What's your new cats name?

Hi Norachan, you know I kept thinking it looked very different and also his temperament does not match that of a BSH. Thanks for directing me and I'm now intrigued to know what breed he is))

I actually feel a little dumb now for thinking it was a BSH:-( Anyway most important is that I'm happy to be it's owner and learn more and take care of him and give him a happy life[emoji]9786[/emoji]️

He's a beautiful cat. I have several long haired cats but none of them have ever had a bath. (Generally, cats hate baths and I want to keep my eye sight for as long as possible.
)

He would probably look a bit better after a brush. You can get proper cat brushes quite cheaply, but an old tooth brush or nail brush will do in a pinch.

Hi again, I had to get his haircut because he had not ever been groomed once and all his hair was seriously matted:( I will invest in a good grooming kit once his hair starts growing back of course[emoji]128077[/emoji]

Oh, so you got him a lion cut? He looks great.

Maybe he's got some Persian in him, they require a lot of grooming. My long haired cats aren't quite that fluffy, they get a good brush all over once a week and their back legs and underarms done every few days. I sometimes have to trim their dreadlocks out with scissors.

Did he behave himself at the groomers? If you can get a really soft brush now and use it to pet him with he'll be easier to groom once his fur starts to grow back. My cats really like to be brushed on their cheeks and under their chin with an old toothbrush.

We've got a care and grooming thread if you need any tips from the experts.

I had no real choice really to have him cut but I agree he does look rather cute:-) He seems quite bubbly afterwards anyway.
Oh during the grooming it was awful and not something I ever want to experience again as he was just so angry:-( it should of been done using anaesthetic really but anyway it's done now.
Thats a great idea about petting with a brush and I will try that as from now, day one I will start to groom him regularly to avoid this happening again.
I will check out all the tips, thanks so much[emoji]9786[/emoji]️
