I've been sick since last weekend, so I've been "out of commission" and inundated with homework since then, so I tasked my boyfriend with cleaning the cat litter for one day. He didn't think to top it up, and tired of dealing with the nasty (picture below) litter box he got for Mo when he got Mo ten years ago, along with Kismet starting to pee higher and higher on the walls to the point of squirting up and out of the taller litterbox onto cardboard storage boxes behind it, I went and bought two 21 gallon containers to start fresh.

This is what I've been dealing with for the past year for one of our litter boxes, and it used to be hooded but it broke and the top got lost several years ago. Apparently it also doubled as Mo's carrier early on:

What we have now, thank goodness:

Neither was a fan of covered boxes since they were used to seeing around while they "went", and often times the other cat would be peeking around at them from somewhere so a nice big clear tote prevents some anxiety.
The cats both showed approval by promptly taking huge dumps in one of them. We're also keeping our newer (the larger) litterbox which we got at the beginning of 2014 since it's still in great shape and not stained or anything.

OHHHH yuk... :lol3: Hope your feeling better, first off. And, I too, have a cat that begins squatting to pee but ends in standing position. I use those totes BUT still he could spray over because he is very tall. I resorted to putting up wall mats that hang into the back of the litter boxes and wipe them down. Thank goodness that he only stands when facing forward in the box. :cross: that it continues. I don't know what I will do then. I would have to find something even taller. :slant:

Okay, I have a really dumb question. How do cats go in and out such huge boxes? I think if my cat see such a big box he'd probably run away thinking it's a trap. I thought cats didn't like confinement.

lol, so gross! I notice I still see some drip marks along the sides, but fortunately it has yet to hit the rim of the box. I need deep litter for Mo, who would dig to the centre of the earth just to pee, but shallow enough litter that the height doesn't escalate Kismet's butt to projectile pee in the air. It's a juggling act over here, but I'm very grateful it hasn't gotten to the point of spurting out or scraping the bottom yet. We can always put the lid on the bins if it comes to it.

Oh, and thank you for the well wishes! I caved and got some Buckley's tablets and am already feeling pretty conked out for the night having hacked my lungs up with a deep chesty cough all day that makes my stomach lurch - including at work. Good times!

I've seen DIY boxes that have holes in the lid, and some that have holes in the sides for cats to get into. Ours can leap right in and out with (relatively) minimal tracking, but it doesn't take much to quickly sweep up off the hard wood. If it ever became problematic or something like Mo's age started to show/the cats felt intimidated by the size and we had to make an easier entrance, it wouldn't take much to get something to cut through the plastic. Not to mention it's cheap enough to get a new one if I royally mess it up (which I bet I would).

Our previous boxes were smaller but shallower, and were originally covered so by comparison I think these are less confined.

Unless they are elderly, they easily jump in and out. Although, Perla my wouldn't use that type because she gets ambushed at times by Wendall. :wife: So she did not feel confident getting inside a box such as that one.

I had to get my cat a covered one, as i woke up one morning to find ALL the cat litter in a pile on the floor from her digging.
Now that's covered she can dig and dig to her hearts content at it all stays in the box :)
It's a top entry one though because it's really easy to scoop and I actually see the poop and such so I don't forget to scoop it :)
