Hey guys,

I've been photographing some local feral cats and the caregiver told me about one that has been covered in flies and maggots. You can also hear him breathing hard, kind of wheezy. It just sounds like he has a respiratory infection. We cleaned him up as best we could and he actually looked like he cleaned himself up pretty well too, but he still is breathing weird and the flies are still bothering him. The caregiver can't really afford veterinary care and actually catching the cat would be extremely difficult as well.

Is there anything we can do to help him? Has anyone heard about this before? The vet said a betadine bath would be beneficial, but we are looking for any other help. Any info at all will help. Thanks.

Maggots are a bad sign, and can go internally and cause a torturing slow death, almost being slowly eaten alive. (sorry for the graphics)

Where are/were the maggots? On his fur someplace in an area?

Poor cat!
Nobody loves him to care for him, and left to suffer this way. Breaks my heart.

What I would do?

Trap his butt, get him to the vet, bring him home and keep caged, and get him recovered, neutered, fattened up and released back.

The vet can give antibiotic shot that lasts 2 weeks so you wouldn't have to administer them.

Just talking to him, safe place and warmth, good food and fresh water, and some time to get well and strong again.

If he has pneumonia, please put him out of his miserable existence. Too bad he would leave this world never knowing love.

They were kind of scattered all over him on his fur. We looked for a wound or something, but didn't see one. He was hard to handle so we did what we could to get him as clean as possible.

Neither of us have space in our homes to care for a feral cat, but we are looking into finding someone to care for him. The other problem is money. Hopefully we can administer something to him that will help or find a foster home.

He's already fixed and vaccinated, part of a colony that's fed everyday so hopefully he'll bounce back well.

Find a rescue group, that's what I have and I take in and get help for homeless cats all the time.

The maggots won't leave on their own, they just keep reproducing.

All it takes is a cage. If a rescue doesn't have a place to foster him, which is very likely as we are all so maxed out with kitten season, they can loan you a cage and offer help medically.

It's not hard, and the feeling in your heart once he is well again has no description, priceless.

Get a hava heart cage.  The humane society gives them out for free with a small fee where I live. The money is returned when you return the trap.
