Hi all :)

This is going to be a very long read-

So before  I get into it, I think the main question is...do you guys think it would be okay to wait three days until the vet comes back from vacation?

After that, it would be great if anyone could share their opinions on what the cat has. I'm starting to think that the current symptoms may be because because of his diet. He starts randomly coughing sometimes, and the vet mentioned that it could be acid reflux.

Anyway, I'll describe the last two weeks.

We came home from vacation, and found that cat has green, very liquid, totally odorless diarrhea with mucous. We went to the vet next day, with a few samples for him. The samples came back negative, but the vet had diagnosed him with colitis and  prescribed flagyl (antibiotic). He also prescribed royal canine for him to eat, something that's easier for him to digest.  While on the antibiotics cat's condition improved a lot. Consistency of the poop was almost normal, although its color now resembled the color of the new food (yellow).

After the antibiotic treatment was over, I didn't want to keep giving him the royal canine (terrible ingredients) so I did a very stupid thing and changed his food back to his old one basically overnight.

He seems to be regressing now, diarrhea has started again although not as severe.

The symptoms this time are different, the color is still yellow. It's more soft than liquid, although there's still liquid there. Also, at the very end, a glob of blood/mucous comes out.

The cat is an outdoor cat so it's hard to tell how often he goes to the bathroom every day. However, he was kept inside from 6PM to 8AM and only went twice during that time. I think he had giardia because of how much the antibiotics helped him, but I'm not sure if these new symptoms are still giardia or something else. Maybe the colitis hasn't healed (?) yet and was made worse by the diet change?

He's a VERY active cat, and at the moment he seems subdued. He'll still play but not as much, and he spends his time sleeping. His appetite seems to be okay at the moment.

Since this started again, I have (slower this time) changed him back to the food the vet prescribed. We also bought some chicken to boil for him, and were thinking of incorporating it into his diet. Once he's eating just the chicken, we were thinking of getting him started on Nature's variety raw bites or the kibble from the same brand.

Usually he eats ProNature which is a pretty good brand, but we're thinking of switching him to Nature's Variety permanently.

I'm reluctant to go to the vet in the local hospital, the general feeling there is that they're trying to milk me for my money.

Is our plan of action okay? Should we go to the vet immediately?

I'm just not sure how serious the blood in his stool is.

We're also giving him some probiotics.

Sorry this is like the longest post in existence.

Any help at all would be really appreciated,

-Thanks

Diarrhea is not normal in any cat.  It sounds like a food intolerance issue to me.  Maybe IBD as well.  I would suggest getting the cat on a limited ingredient food and add a probiotic to the normal routine.

Thanks for the quick reply, I was thinking something similar. I'll try the limited ingredient diet for a while. :)

You're welcome.  Little Girl had massive diarrhea when she was sick with a fungal infection in her intestines.  We were on a regiment of B12 shots and an antifungal medication that had her running for the litter box every ten minutes and using my bed as a toilet.  It was puddles of green and brown.  I started giving grain free wet food which I mixed in a probiotic and it seemed to help.  Once she was healed and things went back to normal, I started to notice that she would have occasional bad gas and she would also throw up.  I switched her back to grain free wet food, but she showed no interest.  I guess she got use to getting her medicine that way.  She now eats Royal Canin Special 33 for Sensitive Stomachs and we've had absolutely no problems since.  Her poos are normal and small, she isn't throwing up, and she's got tons of energy.

That's great :)

I've given him pumpkin and boiled chicken and he seems to be doing better. No blood today!

Keep giving the pumpkin. You should start to see a difference with that as well.
