Hi there

My cat Gayden has serious anxiety problems and is currently on medication to try and help this problem. The vet recommended Hills calming food for urinary problems to further help him, as he is still not very relaxed.

Most things haven't worked to calm my cat down. We've tried Feliway and Zylkene (a natural calming pill) and now he's on anti anxiety meds due to a spraying problem. But he's still on edge and easily startled, and overall not happy. But it's not health related - he's been recently examined...

I know there are a lot of Hill's haters out there, and I am not fond of the ingredients, but I also think that if a product works (like dealing with health issues) then sometimes it's the choice that makes the most sense in that particular situation.

The question is, does it work? I've seen good reviews, but it's very expensive and I would only want to feed it to my cat if there was a good chance he would like it and that it was effective! Otherwise I would prefer not to only feed them Hill's (they mostly eat Wellness).

Thanks!

Is this the food?

I haven't used it but noticed that one of the ingredients is L-tryptophan. L-tryptophan is an amino acid naturally found in turkey that is known for its calming effect. It also has calcium, which has calming effects. There's probably more tryptophan than you can just by feeding turkey, but you could ask a holistic vet if it's OK to use as a supplement.

Yes, that's the one. Turkey also came to mind when the vet told me about the ingredients. I used to give the boys (our two cats) a bit of chicken in broth (all home made - no salt) each night to aid with Gayden's urinary issues. I couldn't get them to drink water, and wanted to be sure he was peeing enough.

Maybe I'll just give him a bit of turkey in the evenings instead. The other supplement in the food I believe is milk based, which I don't think would work on my cat anyway.

That C/D stuff is like $2.00 a can! And they are small cans!
