Swollen eye

My cat Jake has been through the wringer these past 2 months. About a month and a half ago, he was in the animal hospital for 4 days for a severe asthma attack and URI. He was on 9 medications when he was discharged. He had what I had hoped would be his last vet visit for a while on Thursday, where that number was finally reduced to 3. He'd already finished all his pills and been weaned off of his steroid. The only things he was on anymore were his inhalers (Flovent and albuterol), his feline herpes gel, and terramycin for an infection in his eye.

He was feeling so much better that his vet was confident that he was mostly over everything. (Jake is a senior cat, and overweight, but I got him to play for a good 20 minutes over the weekend. He only stopped because of the asthma). The vet noticed his eye was still a little swollen and pinkish, but told me that the bacterial infection should be gone by now. He said it was more likely viral, and should be cleared up by the oral gel, so I could stop the terramycin as well. We'd continue with the oral gel until his eyes cleared up, then it was up to my discretion

This morning, I woke up to find his eye was swollen, the worst I had ever seen. The inner lids weren't "fire engine red" which the vet kept telling me to check for, but they were definitely discolored. The timing seemed too coincidental to me, so I administered more of the terramycin. It did seem less swollen when I left for work a couple hours later, but I don't know if that's just because things look worse at 5:30 in the morning or it was just wishful thinking on my part.

My main question is: how long should I wait to see if the terramycin works? I'm completely strapped-- he's been an expensive kitty lately-- but I also don't want him uncomfortable or in pain, and I know how delicate eyes can be. I have off on Thursday, so if we had to go back to the vet's, that would be the soonest I'd want to make an appointment, but is that too long to wait? (They have truncated hours tomorrow, so I'd have to leave work to make an appointment).

Sorry to hear that Jake has been so sick lately. Sounds like you have been giving him great care though. He's a lucky cat.

As for the eye, if it does not seem substantially better when you get home, I would at least be on the phone with your vet describing the situation and maybe even taking a picture of it you can send them. Since the vet has seen him so recently, they should really know whether this is related or not and the best course of action. They shouldn't charge you for a follow up phone call. Best of luck to you and many vibes for Jake to be all better soon.

I would call your vet and see what they say.  Usually it takes a day or two to notice improvement with eye infections.  If his eye issue is viral, he needs an anti-viral ointment.  I have a herpes kitty and when she has flare ups she gets Lysine twice a day as well as an anti-viral ointment.  It can take several days (usually like 4 or 5) of putting the ointment in her eyes 3-6 times a day for her eyes to start looking better.

His eye was significantly less swollen when I returned from work, thankfully. I'll continue with the terramycin, but I'll call the vet today on my lunch break to see what he says. Jake's been my top priority lately, and I don't mind, but it would be nice not to have to worry about him for a few days at least.

Thanks for the advice!
