Sorry I'm later than normal today.

When was the last time you deep-cleaned your closets?

Last Friday I dropped my kids off at my mother's house after they had breakfast and I didn't pick them up again until after dinner.  I spent the day going through mostly my closet and DS's closet!  His bedroom was our office before he came along but I never got around to moving all these rubbermaid drawer storage units out of his closet.  Even my wedding gown and graduation gown were in his closet!  He is a true toddler now and moving into a toddler size bed; so I really needed to toddler-proof his room.  Basically that means empty it of everything but his bed, dresser and some QUIET toys.  ;)

I was pregnant with DD when we moved in her 5 years ago and  some things were just put in the closets of both bedrooms and haven't been touched since.  So really; this project is more than a 1 day affair.  So far we took 4 huge bags of clothing plus several of my suits to the Goodwill.  I have a hard time getting rid of some stuff; but I haven't worked outside my home in almost 5 years or had a job that required me to wear business casual 7 years!  So it was time they went.  Plus; they don't fit. :lol3:   Someone will make good use of those suits!  They are classic enough.  I also passed on a bag of scrubs (from another job) to a lady at church. Some were barely worn when I changed jobs and wasn't required to wear scrubs anymore.  I packed up the maternity things because I'm too scared to get rid of those yet! :lol3:

I'm getting ready a list of things to post for sale.  Probably on Craigslist; though the thought of strangers coming to my house isn't my favorite.  It feels good to let go of these things.  I found some treasures in the closets as well.  Like my secret santa gift from PushyLady from our 2008 exchange!  So far the hardest thing to let go of are my design boards from college.  I took pictures of every one of them; but I still can't seem to trash them.  They were my life; especially that last year!

I haven't even touched DD's closet yet.  After I do; I'm buying storage things for their closets so we can get their toys and things organized and out of sight! ;)   The rubbermaid drawers all got moved into my closet so I can keep office things in there plus our school supplies for homeschooling. I'm moving on to at least 9 loads of laundry now.  Some of it is more things that will be headed to goodwill too. Oh; i also broke the vacuum in my cleaning efforts...

My first cat Tinsel and I when I was 8 or 9 I believe. I found this in a collage my mother had done to display at my wedding reception.

My Secret Santa gifts from PushyLady (the tealight holder and matching kitty figurines):

Did you find it was a lot easier to get rid of the other half's stuff? Mine always accuses me of that anyway!
I just deep cleaned my closet this summer but I still need to do the one downstairs, probably a winter project. I've got clothes down there that are older then most of the people on this site, I have a hard time believing I won't be skinny again!

A few days ago. FIL passed away last Tuesday, so to keep myself busy I cleaned out all of our drawers and our closet. Ended up with 5 huge bags full of clothes that either no longer fit or we just don't wear. Though I do need to get rid of some more, I just need to lose more weight and get new stuff first or I won't have anything to wear lol.

4 weeks ago when I moved. I threw out a lot of stuff. Some I saved for a garage sale my community is having next month. But mostly I threw away.

There's something about moving that helps force you into getting rid of some old things, but I still have a ways to go.

As far as clothes, I'm in the exact same boat.

When I moved from an apartment to my house, over 4 years ago

We are not very good at organization in my home.  I relied on my ex in the house we shared for that task.  One of his best qualities was figuring out how to fit things into a small space nicely.

is the second pic of your wedding gown? it's very beautiful, and elegant.
Thank you; that is my wedding dress.  Somewhere I have my mother's wedding dress as well.  It was VERY different!
I need to let my DD see them; she's at that age where weddings are magical.

i reorganized one long closet yesterday. boy, was that a job! i use that long closet (first floor, near the bathroom) as a clothing closet. but i'm in the process of getting the downstairs bedroom ready to actually use as a bedroom starting next spring. it's at the back of the house where it stays coolest during the hot summers, and my snick prefers that i sleep downstairs near her.

i started off several days ago by switching locations for my bed and a rug (was upstairs) and two cat trees and a small bookcase (was in the living room). the bed is just going to be in the living room over the winter, because that's where the wood stove is so it's the warmest. i plan on closing off the upstairs for the winter -- will cut down on the space i need to heat as much over the winter months.

then yesterday i reorganized the clothing closet so that my clothing is all on the shelving in one half of the closet, the other half now has pantry items on it's shelving. i then moved the rest of my pantry items to three kitchen cabinets (that i had cleared out, moving dishes and plastic storage containers). that's as far as i got yesterday, as i still had laundry, cleaning, and putting together another breakfast casserole to do. i now have two medium sized bags of clothing to donate to goodwill.

next step (will be done on friday) is to reorganize the socks shelf in the clothing closet, move assorted things down to store in the basement (like some cases of canning jars), and ask a neighbor to help me move a hutch and oak entertainment center out to the curb. in my area, there's no need to call someone to haul unwanted furniture away, people will pick it up pretty quickly if it's left out by the curb with a "free" sign taped to it.

that will be all i can do until spring. next spring i'll buy the lumber and screws i need to construct a fillman platform twin bed (i found the plans online), put it together and then stain it. i already have a nice thick twin bed mattress to put on the bed. this twin bed will go in the downstairs bedroom along with a small table (have been looking on craigslist) that i'll use for my laptop computer (my spare computer, should my desktop computer develop any problems). in a couple years i'll buy a smart tv and the cat5e cables i'll need to hook that and my laptop up to my router (that's in the living room) so i'll have internet access and can stream to the tv. it'll be two years from now when i have my deck converted to a catio, and one window of the downstairs bedroom will be converted to a door (opening to the catio). my plan is to have internet and tv in that bedroom so when my snick is enjoying her catio, i can be close by but still doing things on the internet/watching tv.

Speaking of closets.

I've been "missing" a box full of Fiestaware since we moved to this house 4-1/2 years ago.  All my mugs and teacups.  We knew it didn't get left on the truck or in the old apartment.  Every time I would bring it up, Tom would commiserate with me and assure me these were not in the attic or the garage - the only 2 places we could possibly think of.

So, last week, I was looking for something else entirely.  There's a box in our coat closet, on the floor that has been there for ages.  I thought, that it was filled with miscellaneous paperwork which had to be filed away since Tom kept telling me that was what it was, and on occasion making me feel guilty for not attending to it.

Well, I pulled the box partially out, and found it was nearly impossible for me to even slide it on the floor.  Put my hand into it and it's filled with tissue paper.  I'm like, WUT?  This isn't old bills!  Then I realize, it's all my Fiestaware!  When I told Tom this, he was a dumbfounded as I was.

Now I have to figure out where to even put all of them lol.  My kitchen cabinets are pretty filled.

Also, since it was partially pulled away from the wall, Casper decided he HAD to explore this box, because cats and boxes.  He was having a hard time getting into it, being it's pretty tall, and he's older now and not quite as nimble, he had to stand on all the shoes and what not on the floor of the closet for leverage.  I'm like, Casper you are NEVER getting yourself into that box when up and over he went.  Discovered his favorite item in there - all the tissue paper ROFL.  Pawing and tearing at it.  Then, he couldn't get himself OUT of the box :p  Finally managed but it was pretty comical to watch.

Wow!  You've got a lot planned!  It sounds like everything will be nice once you are done!

You know what I would do?  Put it back in the closet and say "at least I know where it is now!"
At least till I could come up with a place to put it.
I've had things go missing over the years.  I always find them in the strangest spots.

@MoochNNoodles -- yes! i do have a lot planned. i've got home improvements planned for the next 30 years, either saving for them or having them done. i do what i'm able to myself, but my talents lie with organizing and planning and things not requiring a lot of mechanical or construction knowledge.

I am planning on a large closet-cleaning project later on this month....when Rick goes to Portland for a week. (Shhhh, he cannot find out! Although he knows I do clean something large every time he goes away. I don't tell him that I'm going to do it; he usually finds out when he's looking for something and then I say, "Oh, I moved it to the basement" or something like that.

I will not touch his bureau. I will not touch his desk. I will not touch his work table in the basement (well, not much there anyway). Most of the time I will not touch the closet in our bedroom (it's his closet; mine is in the computer room). Everything else? Give me a chance; that's all I ask. Just a chance. Our bedroom closet is extra-deep and extra large, not that it matters. It's packed full of stuff, mostly Christmas stuff that can't go into the basement bc it's either too fragile or it might be harmed by humidity down there (even with a dehumidifier, we don't want to take chances on some of the items). So it's in the bedroom closet.

My closet? Is a mess right now. I have clothing in sizes from 6 to 12....right now I'm wearing 10s and I need to get this weight off to get back into my regular clothes......someday, I hope. But I can't get rid of my "fat" clothes because my weight fluctuates too much. So I have jeans and pants in all different sizes, which is ridiculous, but that's the way it is. Shirts from Large down to Small, again because of my weight changes. I even kept some of my XL tops because well, I never know what I'm going to weigh. So I keep everything. Stupid, I know, but.......    Shoes that I don't wear that often, but often enough to want to keep them. Boots because, well, I just love boots.

The bathroom closet is a double closet and it needs another cleaning out, even though I know I just did it this past spring when Rick was gone. The hall closet is just a mess, too. And let's not even go to the closet in the basement. But I'm going there, too.

It's an organization thing, more than anything else.

Let's just say that I'm going to be busy when he goes to Portland.
