So there's this tabby cat that lives in my barn. Everytime I go to feed him he acts like he's never eaten. He disappears at night. Won't come to the front porch I already tried. Then he went to a neighbors yard and disappeared for a week I was so sad but he showed up today! He was starving. He isn't really skin and bones at all he's pretty muscular. He has a few wounds on his legs he keeps clean and I a want to keep him but I don't know what to do and I don't wanna steal someone's cat. Thanks!

Begin with asking around your neigbours if they know him, if its theirs.

If you make flyers, be sure not every detais is visible, so the owner shall identyfy themselves by telling the  missing details.

OK, what do you want to do with him?  Do you want to foster him into your inside only kitty, your in and out kitty, or are you happy with having him as your barn cat?

Is he intact tom?  If yes, neutering him is one of your priorities.  Also, taking the tests for Felv and Fiv...

I wonder what these sores on his forelegs are from...  Bites from fights, or is he climbing somewhere where its easy to get sores, or has he a skin condition?

Anyway, you must probably use a humane trap.  and prepare somewhere to have him in.  Bathroom in the beginning is quite common.  Or cellar...Supplemented with a dog cage if necessarey

Good luck!

Your cat may have gotten locked in someone's garage or tool shed.  That happens sometimes.  Pet cats will cry and fuss but feral cats like yours will not, they will just wait until the door opens and they can get out again.  He came right back to where he can get food.  I do suggest you get him neutered and vaccinated.  If you trap him just before the neuter date (and they will only let you trap them once, they are wise to it after that)and then put him back out and keep feeding him, he is likely to stay around although he may never be tame.  I had one I fed for 4 years without every trapping him and then he came home after about a week badly injured and I had to get him to a vetl  Now a year later, he's an insidemostly cat although he can go out when he wants, and his legs are fixed although he's quite lame on them.  I got him neutered and vaccinated when his legs were repaired.  He still won't let me touh him but he will eat chicken out of my hand and he doesn't run away from me unless I'm too close and might step on him.  Click on Grey Boy's story below my signature to see pictures of him.  He will never be tame and cuddly, but I'll take care of him for the rest of his life.
