On June 4th I found a 4 week old kitten on the side of the highway with a terrible eye infection. The eye was bulging out of his head and was filled with pus. After 2 days of cleaning, it went down 3/4 in size and drained, and I was finally able to get him in to see a vet. They prescribed medicines for his eye and it cleared up so much that it because clear his eye was actually an under developed birth defect that never formed and got infected. It was fine, closed up on itself and he just became a normal one eyed kitten. The past few days I've noticed he's become very stinky. I mean it's...pungent. I checked his eye after many baths and found his eye has developed a chunky white substance under his lid. I cleaned it out and unfortunately I won't be able to get him to the vet until Friday but I was hoping to get some help on how to clean this up for now. I'm definitely used to taking care of cats, strays and such. But not one with an eye like this. I remember the vet suggesting saline but I wanted to be sure I'll make the correct decision in cleaning his eye properly and whether he'll need the underdeveloped eye removed. Thanks.

That sounds to me like an infection.  It might be caused because of the eye that remains.  Definitely write down anything between now and Friday that seems amiss like energy level, eating habits, and litter habits.  Watch for fever.

Luckily he is acting completely the same. Just as spunky and energetic as usual. I hate that he might have to undergo surgery if his eye is still causing infection after being completely treated. I'm hoping it will just take a little medication and he'll be fine again.

We had a kitten with a very similar rudimentary eye with infection. He had the "eye" removed when he was 6 months old (was neutered at the same time.) We opted to remove the eye early on due to the high risk of the eye causing recurrent infection. He turned 3 this year and is doing great!

Hope your kitten's eye is able to be healed up quickly! But, having the eye removed would be something I would give serious consideration to.

Do you mind if I ask the estimate of cost for that surgery? I want to ensure we can afford it when he does turn 6 months which will be around December

I'll have to look back and see about the cost. (He was in our rescue, so the funds didn't come out of my pocket.)
We chose to have a vet opthomologist due the surgery (she had been treating him since he was 3 weeks old.) She also neutered him so that he didn't have to undergo anesthesia more than once in a short period of time.
