I stopped using california natural dry for chicken and rice for cats when the recall happened.  Found it hard to try anything else. But have been using Merrick Purfect bistro chicken. They liked it but now I see they added MORE powdered cellulose(for hairballs) the fiber is now up to 7.50 with their new packaging?Powdered cellulose is not good for cats..

Its weird calif natural has rice and brown rice and not grain free.

Their grain free has peas and pea fiber.

Others use potatoes as grain free

So what is really grain free. What makes peas, potatoes any better than rice???

I may go back to the regular calif natural and try the grain free also. It seems the only product with less ingredients.

Everything you buy no a days has peas, potatoes, starch!! So what is really the difference? Its all marketing

Any thoughts??

A lot of pet food companies are playing this game.  Grain-free has become synonymous with high quality food in many peoples minds.  These companies have started adding other cheap fillers like peas and potatoes so they can call their food grain-free.  It's a marketing tool for them.  Some kitties do have grain sensitivities so it does help them.  The foods are still high in carbs its just things like peas and potatoes rather than grain.
