I am sure you guys see this question frequently so I apologize for that, but I could really use some advice on my kitten Boone's diet.

I am unsure of Boone's exact age but the vets guess is that he is anywhere between 6 and 7 weeks old. I found him on the highway about two weeks ago now and have been doing my best to give him the best care possible.. But I still have a lot to learn.

When he saw the vet she recommended feeding him as much wet food as he could eat 3-4 times a day. I asked her what brand she recommended and said it didn't matter as long as it said it was for kittens on the package.

I picked up some royal canin babycat instinctive cans and a bag of blue buffalo "blue healthy growth kitten chicken and brown rice recipe". He has always had a bowl of the kibble, and gets the canned food 3-4 times a day as the vet recommended.

However after doing a little research I've found that grains are not healthy for cats? So I've bought a bag of blue buffalo 'blue wilderness chicken recipe for kittens" kibble and cans.

This is what if says on the blue wilderness food:
Delicious, protein-rich, Deboned Chicken
Sweet potatoes that provide healthy complex carbohydrates
Cranberries, blueberries and carrots that support antioxidant enrichment
NO grains or glutens
NO chicken (or poultry) by-product meals
NO artificial preservatives and NO corn, wheat or soy

For now I am rotating between the blue wilderness cans and the royal canin cans. I'm also rotating the two types of kibble until it is gone and then I will continue buying the blue wilderness food.

What do you think?

Actually, life stage labeled pet food is a marketing ploy.  Yes, kittens need more nutrients to keep up with their growing bodies but it doesn't have to be kitten food persay is what I found out.  What I always did with kittens for the first year or so.  I'd leave them a half of cup of grain free kibble to "free feed" on during the day because kittens are easily distracted and will go and play or something will catch their attention so they'll go follow it, etc... They will return to it throughout the day, though.  So you know they're getting enough.  Then for the afternoon meal, I'd give them some wet and again in the evening.  If they were still hungry and bugging me, I would leave another half cup of kibble over night, too.  But usually after the evening meal, they were good through the night until breakfast.  This worked for me as kittens.  It's not to say it will work for you.

Grain free is best and many will tell you it's another marketing ploy because there are still other things not liked in it.  However, as long as there is not corn, wheat, soy then that is the best because these all take water and moisture from their kidneys.  And cats get some of their daily water from their food.  This is not to say it's not of upmost importance to make sure he has fresh and clean water every day, he does.  It's extremely important, even more so than his food brand.  But grain free is best.  The rest of the things not liked by some are for binding or to replace nutrients lost in processing.  And they are much better than the listed above.
