Hi there, I'm just starting the cat introduction process and could use some tips and/or reassurance. I adopted Hammond when he was three/four months old in November. Since then he's been an only cat, but as sweet as can be. He loves everyone (kids included) and is very flexible with change. I brought him to summer camp for three months where we lived in a tiny screened-in cabin and he hunted bugs and "lifeguarded" (his favorite cabin perch spot overlooked the lake). Not one complaint from him! I'd been thinking about getting a second cat for a while, and especially now that I'm in my first year of teaching and gone for upwards of ten hours per day. After many trips to browse at the SPCA, I brought home a new cat yesterday who is approximately 6 months old.

I did lot of research on cat introductions beforehand and have so far followed the steps of isolating the new cat (still working on a name for him), swapping scents, and associating food with any time spent around the door. At first Hammond was very curious about what was on the other side of my bedroom door. No hissing, trying to get in, etc. - just sitting on the other side. When I cracked opened the door at one point (the new cat had been here for a few hours), Hammond was right on the other side and the new cat was near the door too so I quickly shut it. I'm pretty sure they saw each other briefly. Hammond ran down the stairs and did not come back. That evening I put some wet food near the door for Hammond. He seemed a bit apprehensive and ended up hissing when he heard the cat's meow on the other side of the door. I know that this is totally normal (though it was only the second time I'd ever heard Hammond hiss..) but it felt like a step backwards because earlier that day he'd been very interested in the door. I'm worried that when they briefly saw each other (followed by the quick door closing) Hammond got spooked and now thinks there's some monster living upstairs! Should I wait a bit before putting food by the door again? Any tips for the meantime?

Also I'm totally stuck on naming this little tot. I'll post a picture and if a name comes to anyone, please let me know!

Aww, he's very beautiful! Just give it some time. I have four cats and all of the new ones I brought in had to pass inspection by my oldest kitty, Luna. It took her a while to get used to the cat we brought in after her, Bellatrix. Now Luna has no problems at all with new animals. However Bellatrix did when I brought in my boys, Vader and Xeno. And after about a week, they all started to get along. I've even caught them all cuddling together. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I just woke up about five minutes ago. XD About naming, I like themed kitty names. I named three of my cats after Harry Potter characters. Lol. But what I saw when I first looked at him was Linus. I don't know why, but.that's what popped up. Hope everything goes well! (:

The most common name for a pet is bella but Im not suggesting that as a name. He/she looks like part maincune. IDK snickers comes to mind as a pet name

He looks adventurous.  The kind of kitty that gets into everything. More than once.  How about Oscar, I don't know why, it just popped into my head.

I'm happy to report that there has been some progress! I've been serving Hammond's food outside the door and the hissing has mostly subsided. I also sprayed some Feliway yesterday and did a short room swap (with cat grass as a refreshment - Hammond's favorite snack). Hammond hasn't been interested in coming upstairs (unless food was involved) but tonight I was surprised. I'd been holding the kitten for about 30 seconds with the door open slightly when I turned around and, to my surprise, saw Hammond peering at us from the top step. After a few moments he tentatively walked toward us and sat down about four feet away. I didn't want to rush anything, so I held the kitten the whole time. Hammond just watched and even gave a few slow blinks! When the kitten became squirmy, I brought him back into my room and Hammond had left by the time I came back out. Of course I gave him plenty of treats and attention back downstairs as a reward! I think I'll do this a few more times before officially introducing them in an open room.

I think I may call the kitten Carl, after the poet and storyteller Carl Sandburg. This summer I worked at a camp just down the road from his house, which is now a national historic site. We took campers to see musical theater adaptations of some of his Rootabaga Stories, which are about as wacky as they come. I'd always beg to lead those trips! Anyway, this kitten is goofy too!
