Hi there. I am not sure if I am just not Googling properly or if this is not a common discussion but:

We are adopting a puppy at the end of September and for that reason, will need to put the cats on a feeding schedule so that he doesn't get into their food. I have a one year old male cat who is about 14 pounds and a 7 year old female who is 9.

I plan on starting this tonight when I get home from work as the more time they have to adjust the better.

The younger cat must have been starved as a kitten (we adopted him at 7 months) because he eats and eats and then eats some more. I think he'll be easier to train albeit an annoying whiner till he gets used to it.

The older one is whom I am worried about. She is a little more on the fearful side of life and sort of grazes from the food bowl during the day, then (I assume) does her real eating at night after everyone is in bed.

So... Yeah. Any advice would be absolutely helpful.

Oh and we feed them kibble primarily and wet food as a treat once a week or so.

Thanks everyone!

.. My cats eat on a schedule ..  They each get 3 oz of wet  twice a day  &  1/4 cup each  of kibble in between ..

They have always eaten this way .

Do you have a quiet  place to feed the cats where the dog will not have access too ? Maybe that will make the change easier ..

Hi,

do you have a room from which you can later ban your dog? Maby a utility room? If yes I would suggest locking that door and installing a cat flap that will allow your cats free access to their food bowls while keeping the dog out.

I used to free feed my cats until I decided to change their diet from kibble to a wet diet.  At that time, I had 4 cats ranging from 13 years to 2 years.  We were able to make the switch fairly easily.  And one of my cats is a comfort eater....she runs to her dish when she's stressed out.  It's odd, because 3 years later, she will still run to where her (free fed) dish used to be whenever she gets the least bit stressed.  She quickly realizes it's not there, but old habits die hard, I guess
.

Anyway, hopefully this article will help you out.  I think it was written with you in mind

Good luck with the transition, AND with your new puppy
