My cat wakes me up every morning around 5am. I get up and feed him.  A couple hours later, he jumps on the bed again.  I have tried spraying him with water.  He thinks it is a game and continues to jump on and off of the bed.  His litter box is in the bathroom attached to the bedroom, so shutting the bedroom door is not an option.  We tried to put him in the basement, but he sprayed.  Any suggestions to help will be wonderful.

How old is he? I know with our male cat, if he's up you're up. One thing that did help a bit was playing with him and wearing him out then feeding him shortly afterward. We try to do this right before we go to bed, their cycle is hunt, eat, groom and sleep. It didn't stop it all together but it's tolerable now. Plus we've just kinda gotten used to it. It's not a problem during the work week as I'm up at 4:30 so he's cool with that but weekends I can't sleep in past 6am.

Make sure he is tired out at night when you go to sleep. Play with him for at least 20 mins and feed him.

If he still wakes you up multiple times you need to completely ignore him as he tries to wake you up to feed him. Even negative reinforcement like spraying or yelling at him will just tell him that what he is doing is getting your attention. It really sucks early in the morning to try ignoring an annoying cat, but trust me it worked for us. Our cat loved to try waking us up all the time and never stopped. After we started completely ignoring everything he did he just stopped trying. They view any attention as affirmation that they've got what they want from you.

So basically, tire him out and feed him before you sleep and then make sure there is a set time in the morning that you feed him and stick to that time. Ignore him absolutely until it's time for his food.

How old is your cat?  How long have you had him?

My adopted cat, Ruby, took 8 months to learn that no matter how much she badgered me, I wasn't getting up to feed her till the clock radio came on at 6:00.   I would keep telling her she was too early and to come back when the radio came on. Sometimes I would have to put her out of the room and close the door.  But eventually she got the hint.  Now half the time she doesn't come in till the radio comes on and the other half she wakes me before 6:00 so I tell her she's too early and she goes away and comes back when the radio comes on..

There isn't much more I can add here because the best option is wearing him out with play time and then feeding him before bed. The only thing I can add is to make sure he has several toys and of different types. Maybe that will distract and entertain him for a bit in the morning before he gets bored and comes back to you. At least yours doesn't lick the back of your hair until you submit lol.

I really appreciate your response.

Simon is 8.  We tried the play and eat before bed.  He is really disinterested in toys and gets bored after a minute or two.   It doesn't matter what time I feed him. He still wakes me up at 4 each morning.  I feed him around 7 in the morning and at dinner time, but he begs for food constantly.

Let me know if you have an other thoughts.

Simon used to stay in the basement at night, but he sprayed down there one evening in August.  We have not had any spraying issues since.   I took him to the vet last month, where they took his urine and blood sample  His blood work came back normal.  They did find small crystals in his urine.  The vet game me Royal Canine special diet.  I took him for a preliminary follow up and it cleared up the issue.  I am taking him next week to get a final check up, but expect it to be normal again.

After the spraying, we have kept him in the bedroom at night.  His litter box is in our bathroom attached to the bedroom.   We do not want to keep the door to the bedroom open at night.  The bedroom is really the only place to keep him because the remainder of our house is carpeted and we are fearful he will spray again.

Simon jumps on the bed around 4 or 5 am and walks around to get attention.  The goal is to keep him off of the bed all night.  The solutions I have tried so far are as follows:

-Ignoring him.  He paws at my face, claws at my body, or becomes vocal.

-Water.  I spray him and he jumps off the bed.  It becomes a game because he doesn't mind the water.  He will get annoyed by the water, jump off the bed, clean himself off, then jump on the bed again a few minutes/seconds later.  This will go on for hours until I get up for the day.  It has gotten to the point where my entire bed and the cat are soaked.

-Feeding.  The first time he wakes me up at 4, I get up, feed him and go back to bed.  It might take an hour or two, but he never fails to wake me up again.

-Catnip.  I have a cardboard scratching pad that I tried sprinkling with catnip.  He didn't respond and kept jumping on the bed.

-Toys.  He gets bored with most toys.  I tried fuzzy mice, balls with bells or noises, the toys that have a string attached to a rod that you wave and the cat chases, the laser pointer, the Cat's meow, motorized mice, etc.   I try to play with him before bed to wear him out, but he is disinterested.

-Routine. I have tried varying his feeding schedule.  I feed him around 7 in the morning and then when I eat dinner.  I tried feeding three small meals (morning, dinner, bedtime).  That didn't help.

-Fan,  He just found a way to get around it.

Also, I have a big, comfortable cat bed in the room, a couple toys, and a scratching post in the room.  He doesn't use them very often.

I have done a lot of research on the internet for suggestions to help my issue.  I found lots of repellent products to keep cats away from a particular space.  However, I don't want to put any spray on the bed because of the chemicals and I am afraid it will make the bed feel sticky or dirty.  Some websites mention different smells (lavender, orange, etc) that might help to deter the cat.  I don't think this will phase Simon.  Another idea is putting aluminum foil under the sheets, but I don't think that will work either.

I was interested in the CatScram.  This will not work either because Simon is in the room the entire night, the CatScram will be set off every time we shift in the bed, etc.  I am afraid that it will be going off all night and he will be become immune to the sound, become scared, or just freak out..  I am comparing it to a person trying to sleep through a fire alarm going off all night.

My husband and I work full time and we do not have any kids.  Simon is has free reign of house and is by himself most of the day.

Any suggestion you can offer will be wonderful.

Thank you so much.
