Hello, one of our cats has eaten a 57mg Previcox pill that was intended for our dog. We have attempted to induce vomiting with peroxide and been successful in one cat. Unsure which of three cats ate the pill. It has been over an hour since they have eaten the pill. What should my next steps be? How serious is this ie will the cat die?

Sorry for this to be my first post but not sure what to do. Have called the vet but havent heard back.

Hello there.

This constitutes a medical emergency for whichever cat ingested that medication.

Cats CANNOT metabolize this type of drug........it will get into the blood and be processed through the kidneys - which is where the damage will be done. This type of drug destroys feline kidney cells......the cat will go into kidney failure.

Here's that info: http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/firocoxib/

Now, stop wasting time on the Internet and get the cats to an animal ER - where they will be able to "induce vomiting".

We were able to induce vomiting about an hour after ingestion in the cat believed to have eaten the pill.  We spoke with the vet who simply told us to monitor the cats for odd behavior and let him know if any occurred.  As of now the cats have all eaten and seem to be ok.  None of the symptoms have presented themselves at this time.  We are roughly 7.5 hours post ingestion right now.

I'm glad your vet got back to you. :vibes: that your kitties will be okay!
