Hello!

So, I have a poor kitty who has a URI. I took him to the vet and he was given Clavamox to help. From my understanding Clavamox is to help fight any secondary infections. He definitely seems to be doing better, today is day four on the meds, but he's still sneezing. Eyes have stopped watering, and he was getting a little lethargic, he's still not back to normal 100% as he still seems a little tired, but he's behaviorally a lot better. During the whole issue he has been eating fine as well.

The only thing that worries me is for the past two nights in the middle of the night he's gotten two bad sneeze attacks, he'll get a few during the day, but he's had two bad ones in the middle of the night. Like, 8-12 sneezes right in a row. I think he might be waking up from sleeping and his nose is stuffed from not sneezing so he might be forcing it to get it out. Does this seem normal? I know that it can take a week or more to clear up and it isn't an overnight thing, I'm happy he's playing again and his sneezes seem better and the watering of the eyes stopped.

Also, I left the Clavamox out for about 3 hours today, then put it back in the refrigerator. I've read that it should be fine, it's still white and not discolored and he probably only has one more dose left. I just want to make sure.

Thanks! Please put my mind to rest, this has been his been my first vet visit and really stressed me(and him I'm sure) out.

The sneezing is usually the last thing to clear up with an URI for my kitties.  You can ask the vet for some nose drops, rather than more Clavamox since that can really upset a kitty's system if on it for too long.  You should be fine with the med since there's not much left.

Thank you! He probably will just get it tonight and then that'll be it. He's been eating fine and showing no signs of any upset tummy. Like I said though his eyes cleared right up, and his behavior appears back to normal. His nightly sneeze attacks have just been really scaring me.

If he has projectile sneezing and sneezes out yellow or green mucus, then he needs to be seen by the vet.  You can try Little Noses nose drops, found in the Children's section at the pharmacy, 2-3 times a day to help clear up all that gunk in his nose.

He did go to the vet, no colored snot or mucus, just clear.

The sneezing like mad the past two nights is likely because the clavamox is helping and causing his nose to be runnier now.

If the clavamox didn't turn a darker, more beige color then it's still fine.

Last dose and he is still sick basically?

Is this an adult or a kitten? What is his weight approx and what is the dose you have been giving?

He is 8 LBS and about 7 months old. I've been issuing 1ML twice a day as the Vet prescribed, admittedly so he is a SQUIRMER and very hard to keep still, so some of it has been lost/not made it into his mouth. There might be two doses left, which would be day 5.

That's what I thought, if he is an adult-ish size, then 1 bottle is not enough, he will actually need 2. It's a 10 day course treatment.

1 ml is good. Those darn eye dropper things aren't so great either.

I use a 1.0 ml syringe, so I am able to sit them down, put my left arm over the back and scruff, then squirt the med as far back as I can so there's less taste for them too.

You will want to ask the vet for another bottle. Then ask for the 1.0 ml syringe for dosing too.

He originally told me I should only go for 5-7 days. Should I call and double check?

I've never heard of clav given for only 5 days. It's standard for a mild condition is 7-10 days, and can be given for up to 30 days depending on the response you are getting with using it.

If you think you only have maybe 2 more doses, I would be sure to call the vet tmrw and say you just have one dose left and he is just starting to improve now.

Avoid any lapse between bottles. Clavamox is only in his system for 12 hours, so if you don't stay on a fairly strict time table it can allow the bacteria to get through again once it's out of his system.
