Hi, I am from Malaysia.

A few weeks back, I caught my dogs playing with a kitten (in a rough manner). One of my dogs, was literally shaking the kitten like a piece of rag. Thank god, my mother managed to rescue it on time. The kitten had no bite marks but her hind legs were not moving. Brought the kitten to a vet and he gave her injections. She is fine now, eating well but refuses to drink milk. initially she was drinking milk but now not at all. she enjoys eating whiskers. My concern here is that her hind legs ain't moving at all and she drags her legs and also her abdomen is unusually huge, like bloated. Further, she keeps having stool at her anus that wouldn't come out and when she actually litters, there will still be stool at her anus. It is as if she has no control over her anal movement. she shows no sign of pain at her lower body.

I have never taken care of a cat and I am planning to get her to the vet tomorrow. Anyone with any suggestions pls? I am from a small town so the vets here overcharge and ain't very good at their job.

...with the cats...
hi and welcome to TCS!

i sounds as though maybe the kitten may have been injured such that s/he is partially paralyzed.

i don't have experience in this area, but i will try to catch the attention of a couple members who have much knowledge and experience. @Red Top Rescue , @catwoman707 -- may i ask for your expertise for the OP (original poster)?

Her not wanting milk any more is not peculiar, adult cats dont need milk, water is enough.  And cow milk is harmful for many cats.

But you may try with goat milk - goat milk is harmless, and quite a few cats do like it.

Whiskas wet food is OK, so you can proceed with that.

Re her hind parts.   I fear she has gone hurt in the backbone by this violent shaking,  and the nerve trunks there, long down, causing paralysis of the down parts down the waist.   So her problems with poo is not behavioral, but almost surely because she has no or very weak control of the muscles below waist.  Be sure she doesnt get constipated, because she cant put any pressure to press out...

Being an inside kitty and having good care she can probably live a  long, decently good live, - as long as you are sure she hasnt pains.

So yes, do talk it through with the best of these vets you can get in your town.  Be sure she has no real pains, and before you begin with therapy, be sure the therapy cant make things worse.

If it can get better?  Perhaps it can.   Im not sure if common vet can do much - but ask them anyway. As said.

I suspect it must be a top notch surgeon, of professor of veterinary surgery - calibre, no small town vet, even if decently good.   So dont blame them too much they cant get her healthy just like that...

Can it heal by itself?  Not impossible.  Quite a few humans manage overcoming similiar or worse paralysis, caused by broken neck or backbone.  Usually by an enormous strengh of will and lotsa work and effort.   And lotsa of therapy - aided or on their own.

There are cases of almost totally paralysed who come back into normal life.  Others still partly paralysed become wheel-chair athletes and they manage job, wife, children...

So, do massage her.  Try and make work out.  Try to make her use her poor legs.  With a little luck and lotsa work, patience and love you may succeed.

Tx a lot for caring!

Good luck!

ps.  But if you see she IS in pains, and the vet isnt promising it will be better, you may perhaps be forced to let her go, and euthanize her anyway...

Im not saying you shall do it, but in some variations it may be the smallest bad.

Sorry to be so late getting this message but power was out to our complex for six hours and I only now got the message.  This is very sad, and I don't believe your mother rescued the kitten in time.  It was too late. The dog had already injured it very severely.   I believe the dog has broken the kitten's back and severed the spinal cord and left her hind end paralyzed.  The fact she is unable to eliminate stool is a bad sign, and she is probably developing a condition called megacolon where the colon does not pass the stool down as it should, and instead it backs up into a huge ball.  I am glad you are seeing the vet very soon.  It is possible that the kitten might heal but I think it is unlikely.  The vet will know more if he takes x-rays or does an ultrasound to see the extent of the damage caused by the dog.  I am very sorry for you and for the poor little kitten.  I hope the dogs are now locked up in a fence somewhere and cannot get to any more kittens.

To keep on thriving, Tanzy will need specialized care and all the love we can give. Tanzy is unable to go to the bathroom by herself, and so we express her bladder and colon three times a day.

In addition, Tanzy will likely soon begin daily physical therapy. Since she is so young (nine weeks as of 8/29/14), we are optimistic that specialized therapy can help to improve her mobility. Ultimately, we may also outfit her with a mobility cart."
