Ruben(my boyfriend) and I finally left the nest and got our own apartment. Our cat Autumndown has been virtually confined in one setting her entire life. I've never really taken her out of the house or introduced her to many new people. She seemed content with our company and she has ALWAYS faithfully used her litter box um..until today. We moved a couple days ago and she seemed frightened and distraught, she simply stayed put in one corner in my closet and hardly moved. I gave her a bath that night (oh and I used the furminator for the first time;)) so I wonder if that added to her stress? When I checked the litter box last night to clean it it was crap free. I kinda figured heh easy night? :D But NO I couldn't be more wrong because today while on my lunch break it came crashing down (literally!!) A big pile of steaming brown right on my carpet floor! Perhaps I should mention that I got her a new litter pan that had the hood attachment. Maybe she didn' t know that was her poop box? I'm not too sure I'm just here asking for some help from you guys. I don't want to have to deal with reindeer treats every other day. :/ Oh and how can I improve her mood?

Thank you,

Mary Jean

She's been through a lot lately, the move, new litter box with the hood. A bath and the new Furminator. Poor baby.

You need to give her some time. Cats love things to stay the same; they're happiest when they know what's going on from day to day. Give her some time to adjust to her new house. She's scared and she's nervous.

Take the lid off the litter box; some cats don't like lids. Five of our six litter boxes have lids, but we kept one open because one of our cats prefers an open box. Take the lid off the box and let her see it that way. Take her over to the unlidded box and set her down next to it. Let her check it out. She probably hasn't done much exploring in her new house, let alone checking out a new litter box on top of everything else.

Do you still have her old litter box? If so, you might be better off to let her continue to have the old one for a while....at least it's something she's used to.

I hope this works out for her.

Agreed - lots of changes. Too many changes at once. Tons of stress.

If you have the old stuff she used to use, bring it back. Same litter box, same litter, and if she currently has free range of your new place, confine her to one room so she can calm down in one smaller area before she explores other rooms. This way, she'll be able to familiarize herself with the new surroundings bit by bit. The more consistence you can offer from her life back at your last home, the easier and faster it will be for her get comfortable again.

I agree with everyone--stress will do a lot of bad things to cats.
I assume you haven't changed her food. Sudden change of food, even brands, same flavor, can upset a cat's tummy.
