We have a maincoon, 9 years old male. We got him when he's 3 months old and never had littering issues since the first day we brought him home and showed him the litter box once, even after we moved to the new place 5 years ago, showed him the little box once in the new place and he started using the box. 3 years ago we had a visitor stayed in our guest room in the basement, after he left, we noticed a patch of urine on the bed, found it really odd but thought it's just a one time thing. We had another visitor came last year, same thing happened, so we noticed the pattern. Whenever we have visitors, he will urinate the bed. No visitors, no problem. Does anyone have any suggestions besides keeping the door closed? We thought we should not punish him because it's his nature to do such thing, are we correct?

Thanks

You are correct about not punishing.  Animals, especially cats, do not respond well to punishment.  To them, they don't know why they are getting so.  Cats are a live in the moment animal so unless you catch them in the act and shout a firm "NO" they will not know what it is for?  So rubbing their nose in it, spraying them with a water bottle or shouting later will be ineffective.  They will only associate it with what they are doing at that moment.

Cats do not like change.  New smell is a change.  Even if it's temporary.  He is more than likely just trying to get rid of the visitors smell and make it smell like family again.  Just make sure he can't go in there until you've washed the linens and he shouldn't do it any more.

I agree with all of this. I would also consider a water proof mattress cover; just in case.

Good luck!!
