Hi,

I have a female bi-color Siberian cat. I have moderate cat allergies and asthma, and I can tolerate cats for short times but have had severe asthma reactions with some male cats.

I am looking for a new kitten, and am researching the male/female and coat color debate concerning the Siberians that would ON AVERAGE be lower allergen. To anyone with strong asthmatic reactions to cats who successfully lives with Siberians, can you advise your experience with fixed males vs. females, and whether coat color (dark, light, tabby, silver, etc) have made a difference in a good or bad way? I have to decide on a kitten and would like a male, as I have a female and I think she'd prefer it, but I'm very concerned about him possibly being too allergenic, even though he would be much lower than a typical cat. I wonder how much difference there is between males and female Siberians when they have been fixed young?

Thanks! :)

I think I read years ago blacks and black and whites may cause more issues.

I have a bunch of DSH and asthma.  It is a pain but for most part I have a tolerance to mine unless it is deep cleaning a cat tree or going to the vet when they stress shed.  Normal grooming I shower after all are done.  Same for when I change ALL the litter boxes. It really depends on how bad and how much you are willing to deal with.

Hello! :wavey:

I don't have personal experience on this, but did quite a bit of research a few years back. Fixed females have a lower incidence of fel-d1 than fixed males and I believe tabby cats are also the lowest. Neva Masquerade Siberians are the highest.

I'll chime in on this.

The only cat I've ever had severe allergies with, was my sister's short haired pitch black cat.  It has an unusual fur texture, so silky.  I've never before or since felt anything quite like it.  It was so bad, that I was glad I was only spending one night with her family.  Don't know if this is true or not but my experience says it well could be.
