switching from Frontline to Advantage - is 3 weeks too soon to do it?

I've told the story here about adopting the cat I'd been taking care of at my work place.  I had dosed her with Frontline a week before I brought her in but my cats had always been inside and never been treated for fleas.  So, of course, we got fleas.  I put them all on Frontline as soon as I realized, about three months ago now.  Unfortunately, it's not working at all for my 22 pound male, Will.  On top of that, he is allergic and has scratched and chewed several spots.  I tried using a flea comb on him but I was afraid I was hurting him.  I got some Capstar and have been giving it to him when I've seen evidence of fleas (about once a week),  I gave him a pill this morning.  It's a week until they are due for another dose.  I bought some Advantage for all of them.  Despite my constant efforts at treating the house and bedding, this week I've noticed that the two females have fleas again.  So is it too soon to give them the Advantage or should I wait until next week?  I feel so bad for Will.  I think it's psychologically affecting him.  Any itch and he starts furiously licking and growling, even if it's not a flea.  I'm really hoping that the Advantage for large cats will help him.  Any advice will be much appreciated.

I am not familiar with Frontline's instructions on whether you can apply it more often than every 30 days, so to be safe, you might as well wait to apply the Advantage until the 30 days is up for the Frontline.  Advantage is normally applied once every 28 days but it according to the literature, it can be applied as often as once every 7 days if you are fighting a serious infestation.  It is extremely safe even when used more frequently than normal.  It can be used on dogs and cats, as well as ferrets.

Advantage for Large Cats is probably not enough for him at 22 pounds.  Basically, Advantage II (and plain Advantage which does not have the added ingredient to get eggs and larvae) is the exact same formula for cats and dogs and the dose is determined by the weight f the animal.  Bayer markets Advantage II as if it were two different products, and each vial is supposed to be the dosage for one specific animal.  However, there is no dosage for a 22-b cat marketed, and the medium sized dog dose, which is for 11 to 21 pounds, might not even be quite enough, but the large dog dose (21 to 55 lbs) is way too much.  In rescue, we always buy the extra large dog size (which holds 10 time as much as the small cat vial) and divide the doses to most appropriately fit the weight.  (The dog people do the same, adjusting the doses more closely by the weight of the animal raher than using two tubes of different sizes to make up the appropriate dose for the Dogzillas.)  For your 22-pound cat, if you wanted to use multiple tubes of the Advantage for Cats, you could use one Small Cat tube and one Large Cat tube.

You need to go to your vet and buy a Comfortis pill for him.  Give it to him when he eats next.  Keep that regimen up every month, and treat the house, bedding, yard, etc. 

My VERY flea-allergic Angelina, had her best results with Comfortis, when everything else failed.

I would also suggest that your 22 pounder needs to go on a diet, unless he is an unusually large boned cat,

Personally, I would advise against using a potent neurotoxin like SPINOSAD except as a last resort.  The reviews are split about 50-50, some people love it because for them it works and there are no side effects.  Other people hate it because their animals got very sick and even died within hours.  I believe that in some animals, both cats and dogs, it DOES cross the blood/brain barrier -- already proven with certain dog breeds and the ivermectin family of drugs.  For dogs there is a test to determine if they have the genetic marker that shows the drug can cross the blood/brain barrier, but I don't think this exists for cats yet.  Do your own research and make your own choices.  There is nothing inherently wrong with Comfortis, but for some animals, it can be, and has been, deadly.

Thank you Red Top Rescue. This is very helpful information.  I'm going to wait until Tuesday to dose them all.  So far today, I've found no evidence of fleas on any of them.  I'm hoping the ones that had been on my girls, Remy and Summer, this week were affected by the Frontline and didn't lay viable eggs before they died.  I'm keeping a close eye on Will and will give him Capstar at the first sign of any trouble.  I just want him to have time to heal with as little scratching as possible.  I have Advantage for small and large cats so I'll give him a dose of each.

Angelina Cat - I've researched Comfortis and I want to give Advantage a try before I go that route.  As far as Will needing a diet, he probably could lose a little weight but he is a big cat.  I called him my panther cub when he was young.  His paws were huge even when he was a kitten.

We haven't had a full on infestation.  Just a mild but persistent one and I'm sure that's because of Will's problem with Frontline.  No fleas get on me and the only dead ones I've ever seen were a few I got off Will with a flea comb before I started the Capstar treatments.  I've treated the house twice and plan to do so again this weekend.  I vacuum every day and wash the bedclothes every four days.  My dryer broke last night but the repairman is coming tomorrow so hopefully I can stay on schedule without having to go to a laundromat.  It's very frustrating mainly because I hate to see Will suffering.  He's such a beautiful sweet boy.  Here he is lounging on the couch:
