My 2 yr old female tabby has had diarrhea and hair loss for the past couple of weeks.  She has been abnormally agitated as well.  She has always been a healthy cat with very soft hair.  I have always fed my cats dry food.  I just recently gave her an over the counter dewormer and am waiting to see if that does anything. But I can't explain her hair loss(thinning on the lower back area) or her agitation.  I have no money as have been unemployed for several months now so can't afford the vet.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you feed the same brand of dry, or do you mix it up after each bag? How recently did you give her the deworming medicine?

Has anything else changed in the house? Different litter? New pets in the house? New household cleaner that you're using? It may seem like a little change, but some cats don't like change, no matter the size of change.

You could try a Feliway Diffuser (plugs into the wall and emits calming pheromones) to see if that helps calm her down.

I use the same brand dry food- 9-lives.  same cat litter.  I just gave her the wormer yesterday.  She's never been like this.  I've had her since a kitten.  Her and her sister.  I also have her grandson.  All other cats are fine and having no problems.  What is that plugin thing you said and where can I get one.

I would never look at anyone differently for what they can afford to feed their cats, but just so you know, 9 lives is really crappy food.

Someday when you are in a bit better situation financially, it's a good idea to upgrade the food. It doesn't have to be the best out there, but even Kirkland from Costco, or Natural Balance is so much better.

It does cost a bit more, but not bad. They also eat less of it so you won't go through the same amt, which can be considered in being cost effective.

My guess is your cat has flea dermatitis, the telltale sign is often thinning fur and dry skin just above the tail towards the end of the back/spine.

NEVER use grocery store flea meds, never. Like Hartz or Sargent's.

You can buy single dose vials at pet stores, for about $10.00 I believe.

What kind of dewormer did you use?

I have always used that brand because its what they like to eat.  Tried some other comparable brands but they seem to like the 9 lives better so I always stuck with it.  I used the Sergeant's Vetscription Sure Shot Liquid Wormer. 1 tsp as directed.  Next time I get cat food I will get what you suggested and try it out.  Would IAMS be ok or any natural food?

Iams is at least better than 9 lives. Many cat owners feed their cats Iams and are happy with this. It is affordable too.

Glad you are willing and able to switch the food.

Try to get some advantage 11 flea med for kitty. Then after a week or 2 you will likely see his fur looking better already. This will tell you that is exactly what caused the thinning fur.
