Can cats get bored with food?

I apologize if this is more of behavior issue than a nutritional issue.

I have a 5 month old kitten that is is being quite selective with his food. When we got him at six weeks, he was on some really really cheap kitten chow type of food. It was packed with grain and artificial colors; basically it was McDonalds for cats. We wanted to wean him off of it and did so very slowly with a healthier option that still had grain. (I didn't want to rip him off his grains completely and risk him having an upset stomach). He was on that for about 2.5 months when we noticed he was less and less interested in it. I decided it was time to start weaning him off grain completely and we switched him to a grain free and high protein dry food with some wet food mixed in during dinner (because he was teething and it takes him forever to break down the kibbles with his poor little teeth).

When we brought home the new food, he was trying to eat it through the bag. Went absolutely nuts for it and for the following days we fed it to him, he ate EVERYTHING.

It's been about 2 weeks with the new food and he is becoming less and less interested in it. Some days, he wont even touch his food.

We do morning feedings, midday snack, evening feeding.  No free feeding. If he doesn't touch it within the hour I take it away and he waits until the next meal period.

I'm not really sure if this is a boredom thing or if this is him saying that he hates this food.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. He is making me crazy

I'm having similar observations with my cats. They love something on the first try and a few days later they are looking less than pleased. They also start investigating what the other cat is eating, in hopes that it might be something better!

Keeping them interested is becoming a challenge, especially with my food sensitive kitten. I'm looking forward to other people's input on this question.

PS. I feed mine Nature's Variety raw duck/chicken/beef and canned rabbit (same company). I've tried many many different cans of food and had the same results. One of my cats has even decided she won't TOUCH canned food of any kind any more. It's freeze dried kibble or raw only for her highness..

And no, despite all this drama, no one is starving at our house. If anything her highness could loose 1 or 2 pounds lol

Every cat is different, just like people.  One of my cats ONLY wants one food, and one food only.  It's like pulling teeth to get him to eat anything else, and believe me, I have tried, because I want him to eat other types (canned) just in case the manufacturer has a recall, or changes their formula, etc.  Then I have another cat who wants a different food at every meal.  Then I have another one who pretty much will eat almost anything I put in front of him, but he does get tired of it if I serve the same thing too many times in a row.

My picky boy sounds a lot like yours.  Even as a toddler (5 months), he didn't eat much.

Have you thought about just feeding him canned food, since he's already on timed meals?  Maybe he might prefer that.  Here are some food articles that you might find interesting:

Unless I had a cat that was super insistent on only eating a certain kind of food or protein, I would definitely rotate different brands and flavours. Wouldn't you get bored if at every single meal you had to eat the exact same thing?
