Bought a humane trap today to hopefully lure my 2 year old semi-tame boy back (he escaped when husband accidentally left the door open). Adopted Blue from a friend as an 8 week old kitty. He has never been outside of my home before and I live in a forested 10 acres with no neighbors. Terrified that he is out there hungry and cold and doesn't know how to get back. I have left the garage door open and twice the food left out has been eaten, but it was likely one of the many raccoons. Is there a way of attracting my cat rather than the raccoons? Someone suggested I put his kitty litter nearby and an article of my clothing. Any other suggestions, other to just keep trying? Feel that he is hiding close by just watching the house. He wouldn't move until dark but then after dark the raccoons would terrify him- get a sense he feels trapped.I have to leave town in three days for four days and would love to have my kitty back before then.....the nights are getting cold and I live in the rainiest part of the US.

Here is a link with some tips to finding a lost cat

I am so sorry your boy is missing.  When using a humane trap, you never know what you will get inside the trap.  Raccoons will eat anything and everything.  You just may have to get used to trapping and releasing them.

Have you considered purchasing a trail camera?  You can find them on Amazon for around $50-60.  You put them around a post or tree and they will take pictures of anything that moves during the day or night.  You then bring the SD disc inside and pop it into your computer to view the pics.  This lets you know if he is around or who is is around.

I know @Norachan has had luck following deer tracks.  Animals often use the same path.  You might try going out at dawn or dusk and following the animal paths around your area.

Thanks very much for all your suggestions! I am feeling a bit hopeful...no raccoon but did catch a feral. Unfortunately husband set it loose before I had a chance to tell him "noooooo!" Would have liked to bring it in for spay/neuter. I also have been leaving basement door open and food is gone the last 3 nites. It could well be a raccoon or another cat but hoping it's him. Sleeping on the floor of the basement tonite in hopes if it is I can slam the door behind him. He's been inside for two years and only experience outside is when only 8 weeks old, and it was not at my home. We have tons of coyotes who roam- one caught a cat under my bedroom window even. Feel like it's a race against time to get him back indoors. May see what happens for the next few nites with the trap and invest then in the camera.

Thanks for your thoughtful help.
