I adopted my cat a month ago and they told me she had a 'kitty cold' that would probably go away within a few days. We took her to the vet for a check up and he gave us antibiotics for the cold and after the 7 day dose she was fine. Yesturday she started sounding congested again, then this morning she sneezed a couple times. She has no problems with her eyes, not even the  first time she had the cold. I don't know how she could have gotten a cold again being an indoors car and the only cat of the house. I read up on URIs and now I'm thinking she has herpes to have gotten sick without interaction with another cat. I really don't want to have her on a another dose of antibiotics so soon after she finished her first dose. What do you guys think I should do?

It may be herpes, and if it is, L-Lysine added to her food can help long term (discuss with vet).  I would take her back in to the vet.  Going back on antibiotics isn't bad for her, quite the reverse if she is ill again.

I want to add that her energy level is great and she is eating normally. Everything thing is normal except her congestion and occasional sneezing.

My adopted shelter cat adopted a nasty cold after I got him (URI, herpes). I believe he ended up on 2 rounds of antibiotics because it was a bit stubborn. May also be that your kitty has allergies? I gave him L-lysine to his food and also gave him some l-lysine treats for a few months after. He's been good every since. Hope that help!

It's possible that the infection didn't clear up completely with the first round of antibiotics and another round might help.  It could also be something triggered by seasonal allergies.  If you want to try waiting it out, it's possible that it will clear up on its own, but you'll need to use some saline drops in her nose (like Little Noses) and/or steam her frequently in the bathroom to help break up the last of the congestion.  Otherwise call the vet's office and let them know what's going on and see if they'll prescribe more antibiotics for her.  I'd say as long as she's eating normally, playing normally, and using the box normally, then you can try the nose drops and steam.

Thanks for all the responses, we took her back to the vet and she went back on the antibiotics and we have added l-lysine to her food. We will try the little noses.

Is there a recommended amount of times I use the saline spray?
