My cat is 1.5 years old male cat. I went abroad 2 weeks ago and my family let him go out most of the time and he started to fight with another male cat. He is a very active and playfull cat but he doesn't tolerate when we try to make him to do something he doesn't want. He was not scratching during most of the year but during last month he twice scratched my legs when he was sick and during my absence he scratched my gradmother's hand when she tried to bring him home during the fight. He is not vaccinated so I will vaccinate him next week. I will neuter him in the coming December. I know that neutering will help but I won't be able to neuter him untill december. But what can I do now? He was meowing loudly most of the time when he is inside so I let him out. I can't forse him to stay at home because he is very wild and may  scretch me.  How can I control his behavior and make him stay at house?

I agree, the easiest way to control his behaviour of wanting to wander and getting into fights is to get him neutered ASAP and keep him indoors in the meantime, no matter how much he yowls about it. Cat fights can be pretty messy - people should never get physically involved trying to separate cats because it's quite common to get badly injured in the process. If anyone needs to separate fighting cats, best not to use your own limbs. Not to mention the potential for bad injuries and potentially spread of disease during cat fights.

I agree with the others. This is typical un-neutered (entire ) tom cat behaviour

Unfortunately nothing is going to stop this behaviour apart from neutering him ;)

The main problems with letting him out now before he is neutered is if he get injured fighting, this will mean expensive vet bills. Also he might decide to wander off (maybe not come back) in his search for females to satisfy his needs.

The best way to control this no matter how difficult it is to keep them indoors is best.Once cats get that fresh air they will always want it
Try walking three cats on a leash twice a day that's what we have toi go through in our household.

Thank you very much for your replies. My cat is much more relaxed now and spends most of the time in the house or in the garden and every evening comes home. And as the weather becomes colder he will no more want to go out. I will neuter him in the winter and hope he will no more fight untill that time.

By allowing him outside when he is not neutered will just create more kittens in this overpopulated cat world.  If you cannot neuter him until winter, keep him inside.  He will search out high and low for a female and fight aggressively other toms that get in the way.  More unwanted kittens will be brought into this world.  The responsible thing to do is to get him neutered ASAP.  There are low cost spay/neuter clinics everywhere.  If you provide your location, we can help you to find one.  If you cannot neuter until later, he needs to be kept inside.  This will not be an easy task, as he will yowl and howl to get outside in response to his raging hormones.  If he goes outside and fights and has wounds you are subjecting him to getting cat diseases that are spread through fighting.  If he becomes infected he can spread the diseases onto others that he fights with.

Please please consider neutering him ASAP.

I agree with Shadow`s rescue that cat will bug till your insane till he finds a way out.If he happenes to be close to the door when its opens and catchs you offguard he bolt outside like a lightening streak. All 3 of my girls are leashed trained and we all have a specific area where they walk at.As it gets colder we start weaning them from going outside although we have tried to see if they like the snow is cold on their tenderfooted paws

That's just how un-neutered cats behave :/. Not much you can do about it until he's neutered. It is getting to the end of mating season in temperate climates in the Northern hemisphere so maybe he'll settle down a little bit, but if you live somewhere tropical/subtropical mating season goes all year.

If you ever get any more cats, its best to have males neutered before 8 months to prevent this behavior from ever starting.

Now I see that you are right. I need to get him neutered as soon as possible and now wait till winter.. Today the farel male cat came back and started to fight with my cat. I think the farel cat came intentionally to fight with my cat because from the ealy morning he was meowing next to our door. My cat heard his voice and managed to escape while my mother was going out. I called his name a lot but he didn't come back. They started to fight then my cat came back. I saw blood on his mouth, cleared it and locked him in  our cellar. It is the only place from where my cat will not escape. I think he will get angry if I keep him in the celler for a few weeks untill I will save some money for his neutering and vaccination. So what can I do now? Can I keep him in the celler for several weeks? I just think he will distrust me later.

The BEST thing u can do for him is "SNIP SNIP"! I hate to say this but you should have got his vaccinations BEFORE letting him outside. They are really important. He needs his rabies too. Check with your local City Hall. A lot of major cities have low cost spay & neuter for residents of that city.My cat has an appointment this weekend with Pasadena Humane for neutering. But vaccines are what u do 1st. U put your animal at risk bringing them into vet offices w/o their shots. They can pick up diseases being in vets, kennels, etc. The fact that your cat is outdoors, fighting, and showing signs of sexual maturity,& most likely spraying his odds of living are cut in half. Outdoor cats don't live as long as indoor "fixed" ones do. The best thing to do is put him in his crate and vaccinate him and neuter mom. ASAP!!!!!

That last part was a typo. I did not mean to type mom. Lol! I meant to say: the best thing u can do 4 him is put him in his crate, take him to vet, get his shots and have him neutered. He will calm down ALOT!

If you let us know where you are we can suggest low cost spay and neuter clinics in your state or city.

Getting him neutered will calm him down, but it won't happen over night. Once an adult male cat has started spraying and fighting with other cats it will take up to a month for his hormones to stop raging, during which time it would be better to keep him in so that he doesn't get into any more fights.

Really it would be better to get him fixed as soon as possible.

Just to let you know though, even older male cats can have a personality change once they've been neutered. He's going to calm down and go back to being the sweet, friendly cat you knew after he's been fixed.

Please help me, I don't know what is happening with my cat. It's like he behaives strangely today. He is like afraid of something after the fight. Today he is at home and doesn't want to go out and whenever hears a noise from outside he runs to the second floor and hides in my parent's room. He eats normally but is sleeping almost all the time from the morning. Can he be sick or just afraid of something? He is not yet vaccinated so I made an appointment with the vet for the vaccination. But do you thing he needs some medical analysis before vaccination or not?

You need to get him neutered. Honestly, he's one and a half years old and just full of male hormones.  Get him done when you take him in for vaccination.  You will notice a big difference.

An unnuetered male cat, tomcats, like to roam and do two things; hunt and mate. Getting him neutered will calm him down but he will probably gain weight ,don't be alarmed

Hi,

Thank you very much for answering my questions. I notice that my cat has changed very much since fighting with the other cat. Now he is afraid of almost everything, is not going out  and is hiding all the time. Whenever he hears a voise from outside he runs and hides under table, in the shelfs and other places. He has never been in such condition. He eats normally so I am sure he is not sick. Will he return to his normal life or will be frightened for all his life?

Something really bad must have happened to him :(. I would suspect that fighting just didn't work out for him but since he runs at the sound of a human voice, that probably means a human did something bad . People do tend to throw things at fighting cats. There's really no way to know if he'll fully get over it or not, but be gentle and not too noisy, don't force him to do anything, make sure he has a safe place to eat, drink, and use the litterbox. Have the vet look him over in case he has an infection---sometimes medical conditions can make a cat scared like that.

I agree with everyone: get him neutered asap.
Regarding him hiding, yes, something must have happened to him, probably by another human who can't stand the sound of cats fighting. It may have been by the owner of the cat your cat was fighting with. Over time, and with reassurances from you (and of course neutering), he should return to his calm(er) self.
A word of warning: use discretion when you take him to get neutered. Because he has not been vaccinated for rabies, if the vet suspects he has been bitten/injured by another cat, the vet may decide to quarantine the cat for a fairly long time. Don't lie if asked a direct question; but don't volunteer information either.
