Help!

My kitten is about three and a half months old and has been really itchy, and my boyfriend and I have what look like flea bites. We grabbed an OTC medication from Target, not knowing any better, and I plopped it on him.

I didn't do a great job, as it got on more fur than cat skin, but when it looked like he was trying to lick it, I started googling, and now I'm petrified. I wiped him with water and Dawn and stuck him under the faucet in the tub, but I'm so worried something will happen to him. He's running around and playing as usual, and his nose is still stuffy from his URI, but I'm so scared he's going to get sick. I know many people have used Hartz with no incident but it doesn't look like others are so lucky.

I put it on him about three hours ago and he seems okay so far but I'm not sure how long I should monitor him.

I don't want to subject him to the emergency vet if I don't have to (although I will in a heartbeat if he starts showing symptoms, but I'm really, really worried.

Help!

Having washed him off with Dawn and water (seemingly fairly immediately) after applying the medication, you are much less likely to have problems. Dawn helps breaks down the medication. It takes a little while for the medication to get into their system.

I suggest you continue to monitor your kitten over the next 12-24 hrs. If you suspect there is a problem, don't hesitate to take him to the vet and let them know Hartz was applied.

I washed him after an hour or so. He may have ingested some, which really worries me. He's sleeping next to me right now, and if he's not eating, drinking, or playing by tomorrow morning, he's going to the 24 hour animal hospital tomorrow morning. I can't believe I didn't do my homework before giving him what's basically poison.

After about 30 hours, our little boy seems just fine... He's been eating, drinking and playing all day. I ordered Advantage for $50 from 1-800-Petmeds so we'll have that by the end of the week. I feel sick over what Hartz could have done to him if I hadn't been looking for information.

I think he would have had a reaction by now if he was going to.  I am so glad that he is well.  I don't know if it's just certain cats that react badly or if the Hartz is different from batch to batch.
