My cat has been sick for months, and isn't getting any better. He's 5 to 6 years old with FIV. I rescued him a couple years ago, and he was pretty overweight. About 6 months ago, he started losing some weight, but I thought that was good since he weighed way too much. But he just kept going. I keep dry food always available, and feed wet food twice a day. I usually didn't watch him eat, but started when I realized just how skinny he was getting. He nibbles and licks it, but not much eating. He's always had very loose stools so that wasn't really a concern, though it became clear that wasn't helping. He was 12.9 pounds at rescue, but just kept dropping. 3 weeks ago, he was at 8.9. Ran the full battery of tests which all showed normal. Tried a couple antibiotics and steroid, tried hypoallergenic food, tried digestive aids. He gained an ounce back, but that could've been because he stayed at the office for fluids because he was dehydrated. He still only nibbled so I tried every food under the sun. But as of today, he has dropped down to 6.7 pounds. He has started running a fever and has a snotty nose; doctor said it's probably secondary. He said there's really nothing else we can do, and it's time to think about letting go. If anyone has any suggestions, I am open.
He doesn't seem to be in any pain. He's not walking slow, he's still jumping on the beds, still very loving and purring anytime he's pet. He still comes running in the mornings and evenings when I open the wet food, even though he barely eats any. He isn't playful though, not surprising. I don't know if he's in pain or not. I don't want to make him suffer unnecessarily, but I don't want to put him to sleep unless it's necessary. I did it with my cat that I'd had for 14 years, and I still second guess that decision. I'd prayed I'd never have to do that again. So I'm considering waiting for him to pass naturally. It doesn't help that my kids are inconsolable.
I'm open to any advice from fellow cat lovers. Thanks!
